Question for the Moderators

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Question for the Moderators

Post by minime »

Would it be possible to add a field in the profile section allowing us to add the type of still we primarily operate. Might help with understanding some posts that are not clear. Just a thought............

I am not sure about phpBB.

I think it might be a goode addition on the space under our avatars.

However, this is something which UJ would have to see how to do in phpBB.

If you want to do it at this time, you can always add a line to your signature.

I reckon we'd nearly all have both tucked away somewhere and use em as the mood (and the stocks) dictate.

Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

While trying to respond to a thread by MountedGoat I searched his posts for 20 minutes or so trying to decide if he is exclusively a pot stiller or if he's running a column. I suppose I could have asked but it would be a simple field to fill when joining the forum or editing your profile and could make it easier to understand questions posed. I still haven't figured out what he's running.
This is the tread that got me wondering. http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8745

@punkin
I use a pot still too for stripping and I'm getting better with it but I'd never call myself a pot stiller. I bow in awe to those that have mastered the art!

Running a pot is very simple, keep the power as low as possible to maintain a boil and collect in lots of separate containers. The art is in the final blend, knowing how much heads/tails to throw into the hearts to get the flavour profile one desires. As stated by others consistency is so very difficult to maintain.

I personally have a long way to go!

True coops, but it's always good. I love my shitty looking pot still, and now that I have a parot it's even easier and maybe even gooder. :D :D

everyone should include a line in their signature, that'd make it clear.

OK........... so I'll now search for my profile to alter - in the meantime - 80(?) litre pot still - (milk bottle with onion head shape) and 1.5metre copper Liebig with 1m water jacket - garden hose - external LPG fired- always full throttle - approx 5 litre per hour of product - Ist run say 50 litre of a 100 litre sugarwash=20lt @40% - 2nd run 2x20 lt of 40% plus say 5litre water=20 litre 70+% clean and pure = say cut to 40 Litre @ 40% - standard run for this ol' shiner :-). There is natural reflux with the onion head durying the heatup process (1 hour) - 3 ring medium size wok burner. Also run whisk(e)y, rum, tafia etc.

Like this you mean?

Good idea though!
Been Stilling since October 2007
I operate a 20ltr, 2m LM Reflux Still, based on the Bokmini Photos http://s391.photobucket.com/albums/oo358/ZAXBYC/
I use the head part of this unit for stripping and as a Pot Still- produces LOTS of flavour :D
