Strike water 80°C?

Post by Mash master »

Hi guys, I’m going to be doing some larger batches than usual, I’m going to be mashing in in my 60 L barrels and just wondered what the strike temp should be to get it to 65°C? I will be using about 40 L of water and 13.5 kg of single malted barley.
Cheers 🍻

Since you won't know your heat loss right away shoot a little high on that. It's easy to expose to air and stir to cool, more difficult to raise temps. Take good notes on what the temp does so you can start dialing in the future.

Ben, I will allow about 10°C and see how that works, I reckon about 82 to 83°C to start 👍

10c is a lot. Try 5 and note. You really don't want to be at enzyme kill temp, beta amalyse is denatured at 71°c (sustained, a short hit is fine)
