Do you suppose they document the license plate when they install one of those boots ?

They do indeed. They tack on an extra charge of property damage when you cut them off. Better to use a lock pick (or pen) and leave it in good shape.

Seems like a lot of work to avoid paying the fine or just not parking in prohibited areas.

As a Brit I read boot as the rear storage compartment (trunk I believe in north american English). I was wondering why, imagining an accident following an attempt to use the car to prop up a workpiece. Imagine my disappointment when it turned out to be extreme parking fine avoidance.

Frequently these "boots" are installed by third party towing companies. Frequently, these companies employ preditory tactics by booting the vehicle in
areas with no clear signage that parking by the general population is illegal/prohibited.

There’s plenty of video of the accused driving off with them still attached. It’s good for a laugh.

So, just curious, if a boot is a trunk in England and a wheel lock in America who does VLAGAVULVIN think gets the boot in this article? Asking for a friend in the shoe business…

There was a guy in Australia who dressed up in superhero costume, and would go around with a portable angle grinder to hack off clamps. If the cops turn up, just plead ignorance and blame it on Captain Wheel Clamp

They towed my van though. Which sucks but the cat converter was clogged and she was rough. Look guys where I live things are unequivocally crooked and the corruption is immutable.

even being a "Damn Yankee" I was with the Brits on this....thinking it was the trunk.
was it just the trunk lid, or the WHOLE back end of the car ...

when i comes to the same language in different countries, imagine my surprise when i moved from Canada to South Africa - had to go buy tyres.

3 grand in camera van tickets. Same cameras that were on the news for ticketing a parked abandoned car over 1000 times in six months.

I found my car runs better with wheels instead of boots.

Crazy thing was I spent 3 months on the north sea coast and was very proud of myself since I never once drove on the incorrect side of the road. As soon as I got back to the US I went to the bank to check my account balance after being on expense account that long ($$$!!!). living on a farm, i have a few trailers....insurance got so expensive for them, i had to drop it so now i have added hitch locks and booted wheels on the trailers.

so far i've only f'd up two of those goddamn things, forgetting i had them installed. it's getting where insurance ,may be cheaper again.

my only exposure to cackhanded driving was in a Caribbean country, Bahamas or Jamaica. got off the plane, hopped in a cab and as we drive out of the airport my brain was adjusting. Got to a traffic circle (roundabout), went 3/4 around and thought, I get it! this is OK.

a mile down the road an oncoming car caused me to almost lose my mind. i so wanted to jump out the window to safety.

it was really rural there, no traffic. Not so sure i could do it in a more urban environment.

Actually urban tends to be easier. There's more continuous traffic which continually confirms which side of the road you're supposed to be on. Junctions are the most likely place for things to go wrong (turning right if you're on the left) so having other cars around helps.

In Scotland they have a warning sign in 4 languages at the exit from laybys on single carriageway roads. There are so few cars at times that you could easily drive 5 miles on the wrong side of the road before meeting one.

When I first read "I cut the boot off of my car with an angle grinder"
I though an Auzy or Brit had literally cut the back off a car, like my Dad did 50yrs ago when he turned an early 1960's Plymouth Valiant station wagon into a small pickup truck. It was unique, looked factory made and got 30ish miles per gallon with a 170 slant 6.

As to driving on the wrong vs right side of the road.
When I was in Okinawa it was easy to remember, just drive on the wrong side of the road.
The problem was when I got back to the States. What was right, left or wrong.
Several times I had to get out of the way of oncoming traffic.
