Pre build question

Post by Tōtōchtin »

Getting close to completing a rough parts list and ordering. I have a few questions on my still design. I want my still to do it all and have a 6' redhead helper. I figure a boiler is a boiler, I'll be using a 59 L keg. A 3" 5' column for a vm style for neutrals. A bit shorter piece of that column with a 3" hand hammer onion for my whiskey. I'll be using a shotgun 24'' long ,3'' diameter, I'm told that's overkill but I have 3" pipe already.
My question are
1) I plan on using 2 elements to heat with. My plans are to put a 2k close as I can with the 5500 just above that height wise. My question is do you feel using 1500w will keep things boiling?
2) I like my rye, I was wondering if anyone has used air to agitate the mash until it gets moving around on its own to avoid scorching.
3) I plan on using a 10" long dephlegmator 3" dia. My question would it be worth it to use an extra long ferrules on the bottom creating about 2.5" before the tubes to help cool the vapor a bit before entering. I figured the thicker metal will cooled down a bit from the water above.
4}Would installing a filter plate like this one at the bottom of the column help with puking or just make it worse?

I thank you for your time. I will come back and show a drawing for your critics once I have my ideas firmed up a bit more.

There's always something else.
5) The misses wants flavored vodka/gin so I was planning on installing an offset basket before the product condenser. Would it be prudent to install on the drain for the basket a tube going back over to the tube before the shotgun. My thinking by the time the vapor get in this area it will have cooled down enough to easily condensate in the botanical basket. This way I can keep the basket inline without having to remove it.
