Does anyone besides me use “crimped “ corn? That’s corn ran through a hammer mill. It breaks it up very well, saves me a bunch of work but my problem is it is right out of the field and very dirty, cobs and such included. I’ve put it in a bucket and ran water through it but you lose a lot of flour doing that. I am wondering what is lost with this process or if it matters, cause the dirt doesn’t seam to come out in the product. Just asking for your 2 cents.

That would be "cracked" not "crimped."

Depending on my feed store, the whole corn can have bits of cob, wild burrs, even dessicated bugs. I run my hand through the kernels as they feed the hopper. grab what I can, but I don't fret over the bits I miss.

Instead of running water, put your cracked corn into a container and add water to cover it. The bits of cob and such will float to the top. Skim them off with a strainer. If there's actual dirt in it, that should sink to the very bottom?

When you heat the corn to gelatinize it will all be sterilized. I do skim off the floaties when I add the corn to my boiling pot but other than that I don't worry much about it. It will go through the ferment and be given to the chickens after I drain the beer.

Don't sweat it. Grab any pieces out that will mess with your mill, grind it and run it.
