Bare minimum to convert Keg?

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

Bare minimum to convert Keg?

Post by Knife_man »

So I currently run a very small boiler on a induction "Hot plate" but my ferments have been growing and to be frank the last one @ 55 litres although probably small by some standards was a pain , 5 stripping runs and it barely fit into the boiler for a spirit run.

So I'm looking into upgrading to a small keg (30 ltr) I have a source on the keg but wondering what is the bare minimum I can do to convert it so I can use it now and upgrade as I go.

I want to stay electric.

So I'm thinking
*buy/make an adaptor for the element ( I have a lathe and can weld so thats no problem)
* buy and wire in an SCR? Is that the correct term? Power control
* buy/make an adaptor to fit my riser/column?

I'm happy to fill/empty through the top until I put in a larger fill port.

Would no access for cleaning bite me in the ass? What about scorching ? I sieve my wash before it goes into the boiler but I'm not too careful about it and some large bits and all of the smaller bits get through.

I'm mainly looking to keep the immediate costs down as the cost of the keg is quite an investment without any modifications. If I have to do ALL the mods at once then it's a non-starter ( at least till I have some more readies. )
