Safety Awareness - Not Just A Slogan

Post by 8Ball »

During a recent spirit run, I was multi-tasking: Cleaning up odds & ends while running the pot. I was literally 10 feet away and didn’t notice that my parrot had leaned away from the product stream. About 4 ounces of high proof leaked in close proximity to the open propane flame. I’m confident that my extended Liebig condenser & parrot design — down & away from the burner helped to prevent a fire. That & the fact that I run in a well ventilated, open sided, covered shelter outdoors. Factor in safety when you do your builds, and practice the art responsibly please.
🎱 The struggle is real and this rabbit hole just got interesting.
Per a conversation I had with Mr. Jay Gibbs regarding white oak barrel staves: “…you gotta get it burning good.”

It's the stuff we don't think about that gets us.

I set up the ccvm and checked the water flow then turned it off. When I fired up the still I forgot to turn it back on. Very suddenly I had distillate dripping from the condenser and a small cloud (I exaggerate for clarity) of vapour coming out of the top of the still.

I shut down the power and looked at it and it took me a good few seconds to work out what my error was.
