Feeding a thumper through a bottom port?

I find myself wondering if it would work well to feed vapor into a thumper via a port at the bottom. For example, if I have a drain port, could I run a tube from the boiler down to that, and then have a distribution tube inside which is horizontal instead of vertical, dipping down to the bottom of the pot?

The reason for thinking about it is that it would make it easier to use the same components for boilers and thumpers of different sizes, rather than building them to fit a specific vessel. Thinking modularity here.
