Frequent random log off?

Post by Steve Broady »

Sometimes, I can stay logged into the forum for days at a time. Other times, I have to log in literally every single time I open a thread to read. When that happens, it seems to go on for a few minutes, and then everything goes back to happy electronics world.

Am I the only one noticing this? Am I doing something wrong? I always select the “keep me logged in on this device” option. It’s not that I mind logging in, but it does get a little bit annoying at times.

I get randomly logged off too. I've blamed it on me using the duckduckgo browser that blocks cookies.

Seems to always happen with search. I have to search, copy the URL then go to a tab already logged in and paste it there to be able set a bookmark. The tab search opens won't log in at all.

Doesn't seem to happen with chrome which sets all sort of tracking cookies

I use duckduckgo as well. I find that it works pretty flawlessly, and I haven't been logged off in a long time (prob 6 months).

I’m primarily using an iPhone and whatever the browser is on this thing. I get logged off if I search (sometimes, but not always), but also just opening tabs after checking for all the active topics. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

I haven’t experienced this problem since Jesse made his updates on the forum. I am usually logged on with my iPad.

So much for that theory...

Happens to me on Android, I'm not on HD much on the desktop.

Just needed to log in. I changed location maybe that's the reason. At home I'm on my wifi, here I'm on cell data.

It's really only minor aggro but if it's something simple it would be nice to eliminate.

I think that's it. Found a wifi to connect to, turned off mobile data and had to log in again, undid that so I'm on mobile data again and had to log in again.

I'm on a VPN too so my "location" my changes at random times as well.

I chalk it up to the cost of what limited privacy I can achieve.

I checked the "remember me" button and it seems to keep logged in through all the above.

I assume it’s something I’m doing wrong. That, or someone doesn’t like me. Wouldn’t surprise me.. I have a reputation at work for being less than friendly, because I refuse to tolerate childishness, complacency, unprofessionalism, and plain old laziness. That, or I really am just the asshole some people think I am.

Steve, if you have to login every time you visit or open a new tab in safari (the iOS browser), it may be that is that you are using the browser in privacy mode.

Here’s an apple support page to help you if you don’t know what I’m talking about: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203036

If this doesn’t fix it, there were some issues in early versions of “prevent cross-site tracking” that might be it, so you can try updating your iOS.
I just read an article about the dangers of drinking that scared the crap out of me.

That’s it. No more reading!

nope
i have HD Open on my laptop all day (yes - i read every post - maybe not always to the end, but ....) and if not at my desk open on my phone
i wander in and out of wifi reception regularly where it has to switch to LTE (3G) - never have an issue
even connecting to my mobile hotspot when i leave the 'farm' - no issue

I think you guys have some sort of browser setting issue, or a security setting.

I'm running win10 and Android

what are those with trouble running?
I see mention of a lot of eyefones and eyepatches - perhaps and fruit thing? :D

It might be a fruity thing, Eric. I’m using Safari, definitely not in privacy mode, I keep both the iOS and Safari updated as regularly as practical, and always check the “remember me” radio button when logging in. I travel a lot, using wifi both at home and in hotels, data in between. The problem does not seem to be correlated with my internet connection, since I might have no issues at all over the space of a couple days wild bouncing back and forth between wifi and data, and then have it crop up repeatedly at home on my seemingly stable wifi. Or I might have the reverse situation.

I’m baffled, to say the least. For the most part, it’s a minor annoyance, but it has made me lose a couple long posts. I’ll type a post, then press either preview or submit, and then discover that I’ve been logged out while I was typing. And of course, that post is now gone. I’ve learned to always copy the entire post to memory before doing anything else, so that I can simply paste it back of that happens.

I'm on Android with similar issues. I thought I had solved my issues yesterday but have had to log in again since.

Minor annoyance, I agree.

I had assumed it was only me at least I don't feel like the the lone ranger anymore.

I’ve been logged in for months this go around. Phone, laptop, vpn, wifi, wired, 5gc 4g, 5g+, lte, non vpn, work, home, road, etc... Sometimes site updates prompt me to re-login but not the recwnt one. It is possible but you’ll need to sign up for my decoder ring master class to learn the decoder ring persistent login secrets and we’re running a special right now if you can believe it!

Every time you change the way you connect to the internet, you end up with a different IP. Sitting at home, you're probably on WiFi. Walk out the door and connect to the cell network...new IP. Stop by the office and connect to their WiFi...new IP. Turn on a VPN...your IP changes often. Etc.

The site uses "session cookies" stored with your browser data on your internal storage, which tie your unique login to your IP (amongst some other factors). When your IP changes (for any of the reasons above), it breaks that session.

DuckDuckGo is a search engine (Google alternative), not a browser. If you want to avoid search engines, just bookmark the page or type it into the URL bar. Ditch Chrome. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Looks like a browser to me:
16704531908551.png
They do have a web crawler but also use results from Bing.

This all related to ip addresses, cookies and such but it isn't as simple as you say. I started this session today at home on my wifi, I'm now 30 miles away on another wifi and also connected via wireless data.

I didn't have to login again when I got here.

Thanks for the Ted talk on how the interwebs used to work.

we did have a go for a few months, about 8-4 months ago where it would log off sometimes a couple times a day. that seems to have been resolved for the most part.
i have noticed if i log in from a different ip (like at work for instance) next time i login at home i have to sign in again.

of course the server refreshes from time to time and i'm sure that would also log users out...i had a random log out a couple days ago too.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.

I started getting the log off again not as bad as before but still unexpected. I checked the stay logged in and it stopped it. All cool now.

That was a mess. It's been much better since then but still a steady, seemingly random need to log back in. I think this is a bit different issue.

Until someone else brought it up I just logged back in. Now I'm obsessed. This aggression will not stand man!
