I just found out KitchenAid has an attachment for milling grains. I was wondering if anyone has used it and how it worked. It has different settings for coarseness and can grind up to 10 cups at time. (then you have to let it cool for 45 min). It does oats, wheat, corn, rice, etc.
thanks

Sadie,
just my .02
I would probably go ahead and buy something like the AMA USA grain mill at TSC.
Granted it is $300,
but a Kitchen-aid mixer is over $200. The attachment for the kitchen-aid is roughly $150.
If you have a Kitchen-aid, or an extra one, and are making smaller mashes might be good. I would not use our "good one" to do a larger mash.

I do have the artisan stand mixer. My old one (the classic) was almost 20 yrs old, maybe older. I got the artisan for Christmas. It has more power than my old one. I use it for pasta making and it does great. I only do 5 gal mashes so I'm thinking I'll only need to mill about 7-10lbs of grain (give or take depending on the recipe).

The attachment would be so much easier to store also.
I can't believe how much STUFF this hobby has! My husband keeps teasing me I have to turn my sewing room into my stilling room.

I’d use a Corona mill, remove the handle and use a drill with a proper socket attachment. https://coronamill.com/
Depending on type of grain being used, duration and frequency of use; that kitchenaid is going to take a beating.

I have had one for 15 years or so and it works well. I use it to grind wheat for whole wheat flour so usually only a pound at a time. But that is also flour fine, for brewing grain you would not need it on the finest setting. I think you would be fine for 10 lb batches.
My only concern is I have not tried something like whole corn. I could grab a handful tonight and give it a try.

I looked at a Kitchen-Aid milling attachment video a few years back and the output was terribly slow. I've had my 6qt KA mixer for over 25 years and although a dependable workhorse for mixing bread and pizza dough, it heats up over extended batches. A long session of grinding grain might be an issue for the motor.

I wouldn't grind whole corn, I would always start with cracked or flaked, but thanks this is good to know. I would also like to use it for making bread.

I am nervous of it over heating.

When I grind wheat for bread my conversation is 120 gm/cup so their spec says 1.2 kg then wait 45 minutes. I'm not very patient so I wouldn't burn that out the first time I used.
I'm a corona mill guy, run it with a 600 rpm corded drill and it does great.
I usually ruin any kitchen grade stuff when I try to use it for this hobby.

I think the mill would be fine for a home baker making flour for bread.
i would be really pi$$ed if i burned up my Kitchen-Aid.
not to mention management would be upset too. she got it for me for Christmas a couple years ago.

I've used one for all my cracked corn grinding, which is probably around 400 lbs the past 2 years. It is very slow, taking 2 to 3 hours, but I run it for my next batch while I'm mashing the current batch. I use the middle setting and run it continously for 25 lbs at a time and haven't had any issues. The mixer does get quite warm, tho.
I just bought 200 lbs of whole corn from a local farmer, so I need to try it with whole corn.
We already had the mixer and the mill attachment, so no out of pocket cost for milled corn.

It gets quite warm when I make pasta too. I'm not milling grain yet, so maybe I will keep track of how much grain I go through first. then I will have a better idea of how much I will be doing. Maybe I will want something bigger/stronger.

Just my 2 cents worth, but I would suggest finding another option. For the price of the attachment, you can get a corona mill that does the job much faster, and with a few simple modifications to contain the mess and power it with a drill, it’s a no brainer.
I have the Kitchenaid mill, and have used it for distilling. It’s SLOW. Yes, it’s doable. I do 5 gallon batches, which means roughly 10 lbs of grain. I’ve ground whole corn in it, cracked corn, malt, etc. It will certainly do the job, but you’ll be at it for a while. I’m a self proclaimed cheap bastard, but after a couple rounds of that I bought a Corona mill. It’s worth the money.

well it sounds like the KitchenAid will work, but there are better options out there. I also don't want to mess up my new mixer.
Thanks everybody for your responces!

I'm curious why people prefer corona over a 2 roller style? The 2 roller reviews are excellent and they are only 150ish bucks.
The hopper is bigger and can be used with a power drill. Only downside is they don't do whole corn. Mine crushes grain very fast. Like 12lbs in 10 minutes.
I'm just curious what people got to say.

The 2 roller is for barley and soft grain. It will do cracked corn but not whole corn which is what most buy for freshness.
Not the right tool for the job.

The cracked corn will take out the roller bushings prematurely. I went with a hammer mill.

Yeah, I have one, used it for 5 years. Does a fair job on the grains, but my mixer motor really amped out the decibels too. That, and its tiny hopper made me move on to a more specialized grain mill, It too has its dark side, but am through using the Kitchen Aid with attachments.

Monster Mill two roller will do whole corn. But it still only cracks it. To get corn to a course flour you need a hammer or burr mill.
For beer using a roller mill leaves the husk in tact and limit tannin extraction. That is not so much a deal with distilling.

LOL!! I did see something like that and my eyes lit up. It was under $200.00. I thought that was a fair price since the little attachment was $150.00 ish.
I should just buy it, set it up in his garage and act like it's always been there.

I'm a cheap bastard! Corona was about $40ish. I already had the drill, but I did buy a new bucket. So I'm in my setup for maybe $50. Not the fastest, but it's cheap and it does the job, and I'm not super worried about time anyway. I grind while running the stripping run from the last batch, so I have plenty of time to kill.

I didn't realize the corona was only 40 bucks. Was that new? If so that big incentive.

I only do crush corn through mine and cereal grains. Well see how it last and maybe go a different route next time. I'm getting good conversion with my corn crush
