Glycerine - Does it obfuscate ABV

Post by alexmason745 »

Hi,
Just wondering if Glycerine obfuscates ABV like sugar does, as in will my abv density reader/hydrometer be accurate when doing an ABV test?

Apologies if posted in the wrong subforum.

Yes. But you would need to use a lot if you are using a hydrometer. Glycerin is 1.26x the weight of water, so if you were to use a lot you would see your ABV appear to be lower. Usually when using glycerin its a few drops, really not enough to make a difference. You could do the math to figure out actual content, but unless your reporting to some form of authority it probably doesn't matter.

If you are using an alcohol content refractometer it could be more, glycerin is highly refractive. Again, some math can solve it for you.

The easier answer is to find your ABV before you add glycerin.
