Who salts their Lager?

Post by IdleHands »

Where I grew up, I never saw anyone salt their lager. Then I moved to Michigan and, at a business lunch, everyone passed the salt shaker around and added a dash of salt in their lager. Later, in Texas, I learned it’s common at bars and restaurants to order a Mexican bottle beer “dressed” with salt on the rim. Is it a regional thing or did I just somehow miss it the first half of my life?

Well shit man. If I’m slicing and dicing sirloin and grilling up shrimp for surf and turf street tacos while simultaneously sipping margaritas and kicking back Mexican cervesa, I’ve been known to throw a bit of salt on the rim to compliment the lime in the bottle

At least now I know what’s for dinner tonight :D
Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.

Not me, thanks.

I actively try to reduce salt intake (age is accumulating on me already). Salt increases likelihood of high blood pressure and I don’t need that. Heck, I don’t even salt the rim of my margarita glass.

Besides, after a while of reducing salt intake, your sensitivity to it increases, so you soon won’t notice eliminating it from your diet.

I have seen drinkers sprinkle a little salt into a beer to catalyze outgassing. It’ll foam up quickly and result in a beer that doesn’t make you want to burp. A little won’t appreciably alter the taste (much). It might just make you a little more thirsty too!

But, YMMV.

I worked with an old Texan who added a small sprinkle of salt and white pepper to his black beers. Gave a nice salty tingle on the lips.

Well…you learn something new every day.
Never heard of salting a beer before. Sounds strange, but I’ve never tried it, so I’m not going to knock it.

My Mother almost always salted her beer she was never a heavy drinker but usually had a tipple at the end of the day. She passed away a couple years ago at age 91 so I don't think it ever hurt her. :D

I grew up in Hamtramck, Michigan in the 60’-70’s. It’s about 5 miles from downtown Detroit. Very working class with a neighborhood bar on just about every corner. Salting your beer was very common as I recall. Not the rim, but a dash or two directly into it. Sometimes a splash of tomato juice too. Now add a couple boiled eggs, some pickled sausage and a shot of Kessler’s and you were on your way to a good time.
🎱 The struggle is real and this rabbit hole just got interesting.

A little off topic but......Harpos, joelouis arena, cobohall, pineknob, and the boat on the river. Can't remember the name but lots of good memories in the motor city. Money at Harpos was at par, give em a 20 Canadian and get back 19 American on dollar drink nights. We made money drinking there until they caught on.
We nicknamed it herpos after a buddy got a huge coldsore from dollar pitcher night.
I still remember the wet tshirt contest.
Olga won every weekend. She had some great bolt on's . No salt just good memories.
the more you keep to yourself the more "free" you will be and the more you will git away with.

I’ll salt and lime a lager in the summer time! I sweat so much that my body craves it. But I can only have the one or two drinks to avoid the dehydration hangover.

It is very common here on the gulf coast of Texas to have a dressed beer, they wet the neck and shake corse salt before opening and put a lime in it. Mostly Mexican beers but alot of people do in on light domestic beers also. I'm guessing it's a reagonal thing or climate type of thing it's hot here!
