Brass fittings

Hi All,

I've got a reflux. It's working great. The collumn is attached to the boiler using BRASS connectors. Those exposed to the vapor get really dark after each run. Is it lead/other heavy metal? Is it hazardous? will it be passed onto the other side with my distillate? Would carbon filtering remove any nasties as it does with water(I use water filtering, portable purifiers with carbon filters)?

Any thoughts? I'd really appreciate the answer. I'm a bit worried and cannot face pouring 4Lts of perfectly good spirit down the sink.

I've read that many commercial distilleries use brass fittings in their stills.

Thanks for your responses, everybody. I've soaked them. Seems to be working. Much appreciated.

Cheers
