Found unknown skill after 70 years

My doctor told me to use my brain more after a serious tbi ,lose it or use it. Which is why I got into learning here. When I was laid up I saw my first moonshiners program then graduated to George. While I was down watched a lot of TV for the first time. Got into poker. Started playing about 4 months ago. I won 2 tournaments this month which surprised the hell out of me. I damaged an area that made me lose all math and language. Laid up in a hospital around only English speakers I lost 90% of my vocabulary. Family thinks I'm lazy but 20 words I learn in one day I forget the next. Poker being heavy on math I'm surprised I do so well. Can't be pure luck because I have made it to the final table a good few times.
Now if I can just learn and remember without blowing my still up and burning down the ranch.

Well, ya’ better! Or your story here will be a short one.

I’ve found that a pocket notebook and an ink pen makes remembering things, especially DANGERS, works wonders. Write it down and you’ll remember not only what you wrote, but other things that relate to what you wrote.

Stilling is still much less risky than deep frying a turkey, according to the recorded data. Cross t's and dot i's and it'll be fine. And never run a still unattended.
+1 on the pocket notebook suggestion from SS.
I think you'll do just fine if you can keep focused on the task at hand, especially if you're planning double retort runs, it takes a bit longer to get both heated and running.

I've never been diagnosed with a TBI, though I have bumped my head pretty good a number of times, I remember numbers for decades while forgetting my own birthday frequently.

I know this question is kind of off-topic, but, what language did you dream in before and what language do you dream in now?

Don't know about that. I've got clamp boards, file folders and bookcases full of notes. I've got notes covering my desk, notes on the backsides of envelopes and notes with coffee stains. I've got notes as text files, on the computer. I've got more than enough disorganized notes. These notes are not on distilling, but I do maintain two web pages and am also writing a book.

Occasionally I am obliged to clean my desk; and this is where notes can really come in handy. Before I discard any dirty and grimy paper that's been written on, I examine it one last time. More that once this practice has allowed me to retrieve addresses, phone numbers, recipes, passwords, factoids or useful ideas – that I actually had forgotten about.

It's easy to forget. Comes naturally with age. My memory isn't too bad, but my patience or tolerance is 'kaput'..

+1 on the notebook. I know you've been looking at several different configurations so even drawings will remind you how you set up for a particular run. and then be able to bookmark the results. There are a few different apps I use on my phone that I use to log my procedures starting with ferment, to still run, to aging. Helps when 6-12 months later I'm drawing a bottle & I can go back & see how I got there and if I could have improved anywhere along the way.

You, my ole lady,my Dr all say take notes. But what you people don't realize some tbi cases,I can only speak for myself, the brain no longer works that way. You would have to have the thought I have a notebook I better check my notes. Unless I hung it around my neck and saw it, that thought just doesn't arrive. I use white boards by my door to help remember some things. You could hand me a million dollars in a case, I can set it down, have a friend come up excited about waves on the beach. I could just get up and head for the beach and have no thoughts of that case. The good part is everyday is a new day.

I hear that what sets the best poker players apart from the rest is not the math skills, but reading people. So if your good at reading people just think of your still as a person. Give your still a name (Steve) and think of it like your beach buddy. Did you get enough to eat Steve? I’ll fill your boiler if your hungry. Your Condenser is feeling a little hot today Steve, Let me get you some more to drink. Just filled you up with beer Steve. How about I put a collection jar out for you to pee in.

Work with what you got.

Poker is a skill game, but it's difficult to know if you have an advantage in the short term. I know a few players that had a good year or two at some point, but then loose it all back and are overall losers in a 10 year period.

It is a game of numbers and bullshit. One of my first jobs was at Hurrahs in Tahoe. That taught me the evils of money and gambling. It's just something for me to use to exercise my brain. That and dirt bike riding has helped a lot.
