Did you ever go on here and read your old posts? I know most of you have been on here forever, but I searched something and in the search one of my first posts came up. It was funny to read it and how much I didn't know. You don't know stuff until you do, but there was SOOOO much stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. I also had no idea how to use the search so I asked soooo many questions. You guys put up with a lot from me.

I've done it .....everyone should....you soon realise how much or little you have learned since that time.

Bonus if you can find the first post

Not intentionally, but it happened to read them .... it is useful to understand that this forum teaches a lot.

Back in 2010 members were very patient with me and there were very knowledgeable members that were groundbreakers in the field. Unfortunately for one reason or another we have lost some of them over time. I actually have a few former members that I would rather go back and read there posts rather than mine.

Unlike many , I don’t take records . So often I have to search forum to find my old stuff . Oh I posted a lot of crap back when I started
Thankfully on other distiller sites before I started here .

I keep finding all sorts of gems . Like I’d completely forgot about the time I ran Molasses wash through my Scoria packed column as part of my continuous stripper experiments . When I git it out next time , it was growing so much mould between the rocks that I had to chip it all out and dump it .

I spend a lot of time reading old posts. Not necessarily my post. But I do like the old posts.

My first posts were all about T500 stuff. Wish I would have done more reading before dumping my cash into the unit. One of my buddies in the homebrew club swore by it and suggested the purchase. It works okay, but for the cost, I should have invested in my current keg boiler setup to start.

Not much.

I’m close to 10,000 posts now and I figure I read 15 to 20 posts for every one I’ve answered. That’s a lot of reading. And considering I’ve probably only started a dozen threads in all this time, I don’t get too retrospective of my posts, because I mostly just try to share my knowledge and help other hobbyists.

I’ve learned a lot over the years. But, I’ve come to appreciate the many personalities from around the world. There is so much knowledge here that it far exceeds what you could glean from institutions (of higher learning). And without doubt, the answers here far outweigh what you could imitate from watching Youtube videos.

So, thanks to all you contributors over the years, whether here with us now or having moved on from here.

It really is amazing the wealth of knowledge on here. Sometimes I start off searching one thing and before I know it I have clicked on 100 different things I didn't know I wanted to know!

I've often wished you could search members posts by the actual threads they made. Sometimes I'll spend WAY to long searching a members posts cause I know it in there somewhere and my dumbass didn't save it the first time I read it lol.
I don't read my old posts because I haven't offered much to the forums by way of knowledge yet. So I haven't forgotten any important ones yet haha

welp, at least you are making progress in only a few months.

I'm not so bright, i was on the forum reading everything for 3 months before i even found out there is an "index" page. just hopped from one topic to the next. when i finally made a post, i was one of those that slipped past the mods and replied in an active topic. had to go back days later for the welcome center post.

some of us just learn faster than (me) others, i guess!

For me, I jump on every day using the “unread posts” link. If you are logged in, it shows you every thread / post you haven’t read yet. When you click on it, it takes you to the first unread message in the thread. If you mark them all read once, you can stay current from that point on. Great way to figure what you haven’t read yet.

Sometimes going back and reading the really old stuff is entertaining, but then 3 months after you find a thread 5 years later that says that was wrong do it another way.

I Google search any topic i want more specific information on.

Figured I would share my approach to staying current, Might be a Better way, but that’s what I do.

Ditto. Learn a lot about what you don't know and need to read up on so you can find more stuff you need to know!

Same here , my first port of call each time is " unread posts"
I try to read every one of them.
I think if newbs did that they would learn more and faster....almost every time you will learn something and find the answers to questions you didn't know you had yet.

I know that I've moved on from several 'Truths', that were the current consensus of opinion when I first found the forum.

The main site was in need of of a clean out of bad info that had been posted over the years, (that has been done now).

Today, after re-reading a document that I've had on my hard drive for years, (and posted a link to today), but having learned more about the subject in the interim, I realised that I have more homework to do before I start on my next series of rum ferments and distillations. I might have made posts that don't take into account this new/old info, but I suspect not and I don't remember any but.... if I did, there is no way to edit those posts and they are here to stay and for newbies to read. Think about that before you post.

The only disadvantage being that having learned about stuff I didn't know that I didn't know, I often finding myself wanting things that I didn't know existed. This morning I did a deep dive into soxhlet extractors after trying to find a post I wrote about making Creme de Mures. Thankfully I don't know glassblowing or I'd have started making one by n... hang on... just need to go Google something.

Oh yeah

I mostly had the same bad ideas everyone gets at first. Too high gravity ferments, single pot still runs, bad cuts etc

Ive often seen Newb's say that some of us old farts have forgotten what it was like to be new at this...........you only need to go back to your first half dozen posts on the forum .....to be reminded of what it was to be new.....and how much you didn't know.
Its good to do it from time to time.
