What’s your other hobbies?

Post by goinbroke2 »

Ha!!
I barely touch the stills (plural) I make 15-20 gallons each march and that lasts me a year. This march I still had 10 gallons or so left. So what else have I been doing?
Drag racing, off roading, running a YouTube channel, making kombucha, getting in better shape, working on anything I want since I retired in 2020 after 36 years in the army.
Here’s my channel with examples of what I’m doing now…

What else do you guys do??
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

I just got into competitive axe throwing. I'm building a target for the back yard. It'll give me something to do outside.
Ill post pictures when I finally get it put together. Like most things my ideas far exceed my budget and/or what will be allowed by SWMBO

Other than making other forms of booze, I've got a narrowboat that I lived on for 6 years. Now it's just a weekend and occasional evening toy. Currently "doing it up" as, to cut a long miserable story short, a boat yard was supposed to be repainting it and did a crap job and basically abandoned it. So I'm getting it back in "ship shape".

I guess firearms is one of my favorite hobbies. I enjoy building/assembling AR-15s, shooting and reloading. I prefer more precision shooting. I like hitting small targets from relatively far distances. I work up a load for each rifle and take my time to zero in my optics/scopes as well as I can. What's really fun is letting other people shoot my ARs. Often they act a bit surprised that they're repeatedly hitting 4" steel plates at 200+ yards.

Some people bring their rifles over, but can't really hit anything because they didn't realize (or know) that they have to zero their sights or whatever optic they've attached. I give them one of my ARs and they get consistent hits. What I find even MORE enjoyable is helping them zero in their rifle themselves and see how happy they are now knowing that they can consistently hit targets at different distances. Suddenly shooting is much more enjoyable and more satisfying for them. A lot of people just point at a large target that's relatively close and pew pew pew pew not really considering any degree of accuracy. Once they realize that they can actually hit bottle caps at a desired distance if their rifle is just zeroed properly, they get a whole new appreciation for what is possible.

Nice boat Welly!
My family had a houseboat on a Welsh canal for decades but more of a cruiser as we wanted an open rear cabin for fishing from the boat.

I've got so many hobbies I can't wait to retire.

Besides distilling.
Brewing beers, making country wines, making cider with a scratter and press that I built.

Big into angling of all types, including running a club and sitting on a board that governs national angling activities.

Foraging for and collecting wild foods, for brewing, cooking etc and showing my kids what can be found all around them for free.

Wood turning has been on the shelf for a few years but I still have all the kit ready for when I've got the hours to put in again.

Metal detecting is also on the shelf but we have so much rich history around the UK that I'm looking forward to getting back out there in anger.

And finally, just making stuff!
Any stuff!
Make Booze, not War!

No much time for other hobbies. Couple of years ago we bought a place on 47 acres. It had been neglected and my wife wants things re-landscaped. So I mostly move dirt, fix fence, mow stuff, take out dead trees.... would like to get back to restoring a couple of tractors, further restoring a couple of cars as well as doing more shooting. (Part of the reason for buying the place was I can set up a small range). But for the rest of the summer this is about 250 cubic yards of dirt that needs moved and my dump trailer is only a 2.5 yd.

Firearms, (mostly Evil Black Rifles) cooking, RV'ing.
I have aside hustle that keep me pretty busy and generates income to fund my little distillery.
My vinyl work has paid for all of my plotters, and presses, a 40W laser cutter, a few firearms and of course all my stuff for distilling.
A couple years ago we got into hosting RV rallies, after attending our first one. Now we host one every year for our state, and help the rally hosts in two other states with their rallies. To be fair, SWMBO does most of the planning and organizing, I just do as I'm told.
And of course, Im a Freemason so I do a lot in the community, raise money for charity, and scholarships, and depending on who you talk to, plot to take over the world

In my free time, I hang out with my dog, or help out at our friends winery.

Amateur radio, old tractors, motorcycles, blacksmithing and wasting too much time on the internet.
And I forgot, making liquor.

This also continues to amaze me. I’ve come across a number of people who think shooting is like an arcade game… “if the sight is on the target, then I’ll hit the target”. And some of these people have owned guns for ages.

Then once they’ve got the hang of ballistics drop, I have to break the news about windage :D

My father never zeroed his sights or any scope he's ever owned to my knowledge. I don't think he ever knew how. Growing up shooting his guns, I never could hit what I was aiming at. He always had to tell me to hold left, hold right, etc... That's probably why I became determined to get it right. Having grown up that way, it doesn't really surprise me when people's guns aren't sighted in.

Collecting and shooting old weapons. Used to hunt a lot but no longer, Texas doesn’t really have those wide open public spaces unless you want to spend thousands on a hunting lease. Wood turning is good relaxation. And panderin’ to SWMBO.

I’ve got an “Italian hot” bacon just about ready. This stuff is bound for a chicken carbonara. Apologies about the orientation of the pics.

I make sausages. Sorry, couldn’t find a photo. It’s pretty intense on the day of the sausaging, with a bit of butchering, grinding, spice-measuring (shitloads of maths), mixing then firing them slowly into casings. You need an extra arm and a tolerant wife. But the results are generally fantastic. I make Cumberland (a peppery herby English), a Smokey Hungarian (needs liquid smoke), German Bratwurst, Mild Chorizo, and an Italian. Tried to make a Cheeseburger sausage and failed miserably. I love sausages.

After reading I left off smoking food and woodworking. Last year was my first attempt at sausage making using an attachment to the Cuisinart. I do see the advantage to having a dedicated sausage machine.

I spent a couple years in Okinawa, the scuba diving was great.
A friend had a dive boat and I worked as an unpaid deck hand just for the diving.
I still have all my equipment but haven't used it in over 30 years.

I've just started getting into sausage making. If nothing else, get a separate sausage stuffer.. it's night and day different from using a stand mixer attachment. I started with an attachment for my Kitchenaid. It's great for grinding meat but a pain for stuffing. Bought one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hakka%C2%AE-Sa ... B01FUJHAOY and it's a whole new game. Much more enjoyable stuffing and less stressful!

I meant Kitchenaid not Cuisinart. Thanks, I have looked at that one and several others.

1) Cooking--all ethnicities. I even wrote a cookbook.
2) Magic--since age 6, and an avocation all my life. I direct shows for professional magicians.
3) Piano--I was going to major in music, but realized you not only had to be very, very good, you had to be very, very lucky in order to make a living.
4) Construction projects--recent things include a Tiny House, a 1600 sq ft walk-in aviary, and most recently, a mosaic outdoor living room
5) Artisan Cheesemaking--Aged cheeses are basically unknown in Costa Rica, so I have a small herd of dairy goats and make multiple styles of cheese
6) Travel--Every chance we get

Wow wow wow!!!! That's amazing!!! I would never get tired of that view. Thanks for sharing.
Ain't nothing in Texas looks like that!!! I can see why you moved there. It beautiful man.
What part of Texas did you live in? I grew up in Austin and then we moved to Corpus Christi when I was in Jr high school. But for the last 20 years I've been living in Kentucky. There is some beautiful scenery here. But nothing as majestic as Costa Rica. That's for sharing your pictures. .... Bet that cheese you're making down there is awesome. Cheer's 🍻
