Hi all. I'm about to do my first Whiskey. I have made a couple of badmo barrels to age in. Which brings the question of where to age the barrels.
I'm trying to think long ish term. With the harder it is to check the less you will sample.
I'm in Northern UK. Two places in thinking of are either in the attic/loft. Guessing tempering will vary from -5 to 40c with a usual temp of 18c (?). Or going into an area under my floor which does have some water in it from a high water table. But guessing the temperature should be more stable. 8-20c year round?
Reading higher temperature changes ages faster. But does the risk of freezing cause issues or leaks?
What's everyone's thoughts?
Andrew

Re: Where to age badmo barrels?
i keep my barrels in a sea can outside, it ranges in temperature from -45 to 35*C, i've had one leak.
not sure if temp had an effect, but BadMo's being made of dissimilar material may be of more concern. I think i'd have a spill tray bigger than the contents if it were in my dwelling.

I finally quit drinking for good.
now i drink for evil.

There won’t be any freezing at -5. Temp swings are good for oak extraction, but aging is more than oak extraction.
I’ve seen enough people apply heat with good results which leads me to think it might not be a bad idea to shoot for the highest average temp over the year. Stick it in the attic in the summer and under the floor when things cool off.

Higher temps with fluctuations will be the best. Think of it this way, look at the temps in Kentucky v/s Texas v/s Scotland. Texas juice will mature first followed by Kentucky and Scotland takes decades. They have cool temps and much of their spirits are stored in block buildings and underground in cellars and caves.
I don't drink alcohol, I drink distilled spirits.
Therefore I'm not a alcoholic, I'm spiritual.
