Power went out in the middle of hearts collection during spirit run. What should I expect when I’m able to start again?
I think I’m in the second half of hearts. Plan to use small jars as it restarts to assess what’s coming over.

Pot still? You may want to take a very small foreshot cut at the start, but other than that just finish the run.

If it's a reflux column, just fire it back up, stabilize the column for a while then resume taking off. Like Otis said, you can collect what comes out first and see (smell) if you can call it 'foreshots' to set aside or not.

Just as described, pulled 50ml or so and went straight back into the interrupted hearts jar.

If you are making neutral and the first off smells like nail varnish, take a foreshot.
If it's whisky, rum, etc., carry on collecting as if there was no interruption.

Re: Interrupted spirit run
Sorry I'm a little late.
My spirit runs regularly get split into 2 sessions as I like them to last 16-24 hours for optimal cuts (15 gallon pot still) and Ialways tend to start when I'm already 24+ hours without sleep. When you fire back up it's as simple as discarding the first few drops as foreshots until your still head reaches ethanol temperatures or until any headsy/off smells dissipate. This will usually be no more than a tablespoon or two for me - it goes rather quick. But after that you're back on track.

Re: Interrupted spirit run
Let me get this right........you start a run when you already havnt had any sleep for 24 hours?
Isn't that pushing the boundaries of safety a bit to far?
What happens if you suddenly nod off for a quick micro nap and something goes wrong with the still?
Running a still with that sort of lack of sleep seems a really dangerous and shit idea to me.
Something that definitely shouldn't be condoned.
If this wasn't someone else's thread I'd thow it into the " what not to do" area of the forum.

Re: Interrupted spirit run
That's why I turn it off and do it over 2 days. Not something I would ever reccomend people do - starting a run while sleep deprived, that is. As soon as I feel tired (usually I won't actually get tired until the 36-48 hour mark), I kill the power and go to sleep - I also make a point to never sit down during the run due to the possibility of nodding off. Not sure what's wrong with my body when it comes to sleep, but it's not uncommon for me to go 3-4 days at a time without any (not for a lack of trying). But that's why, for me personally, 24 hours isn't a huge deal; with my work schedule, this also becomes the only way I can make time for this hobby unless I were to schedule a vacation just for the purpose of running my still.Saltbush Bill wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 12:42 amLet me get this right........you start a run when you already havnt had any sleep for 24 hours?

Just want to make it clear that I'm in no way condoning running a still if you're too tired to do so. Some people can run a marathon without having a heart attack - not I. And some people can stay awake 72 hours without the fear of collapsing out of exhaustion where they stand: this is me.
Know your body, know your limits, power down when you need to, and always have a fire extinguisher in arms reach.
