Has anyone tried this
The price is right if you have free shipping. But it bothers me that it says 5 gal and then says 35 lb. 5 gal of molasses is 60 lb give or take. The label shows molasses as the only ingredient and sugar at 37%
BTW webrestaurant has golden barrel for $37 but the shipping adds up.

Yeah I scoured the interwebs for a molasses source and came out with nada
If you’re open to it, a lot of people use Panela (dried sugarcane juice containing both sugar and molasses) to make delightful rum. Last time I ran the numbers was about half the cost of molasses

I'd be suspicious of the 37% sugar......I've never personally heard of molasses that low in sugar.

I've used it, it was a seriously heavy molasses funk.
I really liked it but several of my friends didn't.
I recommend the web restaurant golden barrel black strap, yes the shipping is expensive but it's still a better price than you'll find anywhere else.

Evolved Habitats blackstrap molasses at Tractor Supply Co has been good to me @ $11/gallon. The Golden Barrel stuff is good too. 13 pounds of panela, a half gallon of blackstrap, all made up into a 9 gallon wash is wonderful.

Man you got me thinking should buy another bucket... this time Id bump up the sugar with panela or something.

+1 to 8Ball.
I have 10 gallons of rum fermenting now (Tractor Supply Evolved Habitats - “deer lick” molasses). It’s dark and rich and a very “raw” quality. I plan to strip and then run twice through the potstill. Because of the “big” flavors, it needs to be triple distilled for my liking.
Aging on wood would help tame the wild flavors too, but I typically keep my rums white.

My go to is 8lbs panella and 1 gal of good molasses. Nice rum. Next time I’m looking to shoot my thumper with some extra molasses mixed in the the old feints for more flavor.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up with 2 - 5 gal buckets of golden barrel and may get a couple gallons of the Evolved habitats to up the flavor. Save the panella idea until next year.

Maybe Salty , but I noticed it says total sugars as invert . Invert Sugar is Glucose and Fructose . It is possible that they did not mention the Remaining Sucrose .
If you look at typical breakdowns of Blackstrap , it might say something along the lines of 27% Sucrose , 13% Glucose 12% Fructose .
I could also be totally wrong
I gotta say , the weight thing is strange though . Like even if it was 5 gal of water , it would weigh just over 41pounds .mind you , if they only charge you frieght in 35 lbs , then happy days

Yummy,
It's definitely less fermentable sugars.
Not knowing better I did 1g of this 37% sugar molasses to 3g of water and it was only about 4.5% abv.

Its a sugar cane harvesting season here. Thinking about buying my own sugar cane juice to make molasses out of it.

This is what I start with as well. I then add 1 gallon of fresh dunder and recycle Trub for a second and third gen. I found that I prefer not using molasses in those later generations as the aroma and flavors begin to edge toward stronger than I want for my final product. I also recycle feints and use a solera to age so all that is a generational build too.

I just bought the 5 gal of golden barrel from webstaraunt. I paid $37 and I think I paid $20 for shipping. Last year I used some nasty feed grade from my local grain store and it was $35. I ended up doing my first ferment exactly (SBBs all molasses), but the next 2 ferments I added some brown sugar because there was NO sweetness in that nasty molasses. I have to say the rum came out really nice so far.
I'll use the golden barrel this year and see if there is a difference. If it's just about the same, I'll go back to the nasty grain store molasses.

Skip making the molasses, and just ferment the cane juice directly.
This is done in Brazilian Cachaca, and some Rums (Rhums) in Agricole style. It will make a great product, and much less work for you.

I tried doing so but the batch got infected. Probably because of a bacteria from the machine or from the hands of a vendor.
Is boiling it a little to kill bacteria and then cooling it off before pitching in a yeast a good idea?

With just a couple of phone calls I found a local restaurant supply that would sell me a 4-gallon case of molasses for $14/gallon. With tax that was just over $60 for 4 gallons. Might be worth a try if you have a restaurant supply near you.
