I'm no expert on that dude, but from what pics and videos I've seen ... I recall he distilled indoors. I get it though. That video was about going back to the roots. I've seen all of those videos well before that stupid TV show came out. I also saw those Jim Tom interviews.
I remember watching one of those videos and Popcorn pulled out his sawed-off shotgun. I was like ... you idiot! That's up to 10 years in prison an/or up to $10,000.00 fine. Yeah the ATF went right after him. Wasn't that gun charge what started it, the reason he got raided? Later I saw another video with Johnny Knoxville interviewing him and Popcorn showed off the coffin and the foot stone he bought. That was clearly foreshadowing.

This video has been posted many times in different threads. It did get me reading in the history and folklore for the last hour.

The guy was a bad ass.
The knowledge and wisdom he possessed of making a moonshine came from his ancestral lineage. His ancestors were moonshiners , ethnic Irish and Scottish. Before any industrialisation of scotch whisky thats why how scotch whisky was made at a small level . In different villages.

Popcorn knew how to shine no doubt .Always thought he was trying to be a legend in his own mind. And caused him lotta his troubles. Few of the people I know who knew him didnt much care for his attitude . Seems I remember him claiming to make 200 proof shine

Some accounts claim he flaunted his celebrity and attribute his legal troubles to his persistent provoking of local law enforcement into arresting him merely for the notoriety. He faced trial too many times, and once his leniency and grace periods had been completely exhausted, at his age, rather than endure an imposed lengthy prison term, he saw fit to take his life.
Now a 'legend', I wonder how Popcorn's prior knowledge and wisdom would stack up against today's modern homedistilling expertise.

There's a distinct difference between homedistilling, and making moonshine for profit. Shiners, and the liquor industry lobbyists are the reason home distilling is illegal in the US.

Not debating you as what you said is definitely a truism.
But can also say with 100% certainty that there are professional distillers that put the juice first above all. Commercial scale repetitions are what allows a maker to perfect his craft.
Some make it, most don't.
If we are talking about expertise with respect to making the juice that is.
Let me rephrase,,,there are pro distillers that care every bit as much as the most ardent hobbyist about quality and the outcome of their efforts.

Oh, without a doubt. I wouldn't put Popcorn in the same category as a professional distiller in a licensed distillery either.
I think that pro distillers who are so passionate about their craft they are willing to invest and start a legitimate business and deal with the red tape deserve the utmost respect.

200 proof is basically 100% Abv right?
I read a book of Rick Morris who worked in a i industry for some 30 years. He said even with a continuous still people dont go above 95% Abv.

Look up the term azeotrope. It’s not physically possible to get 100% ethanol via distillation alone. Anyone who claims to be doing so without additional steps (such as molecular sieves) is either a liar or woefully ignorant, and not someone I’d consider an expert on the subject.

I have no idea who Rick Morris is ...nor do I care......what I can tell you is that a continuous still is the last thing you would use to obtain 95 ABV in this hobby.....it just doesnt work that way.
As for Popcorn.....I'll take the word of those who lived and grew up in those parts and know about real ol time shining......he pretty much a legend in his own mind......he pushed that side and got some fame in the end.

fractional column will get you 95%. molecular sieves to anhydrous ethanol.
Don't drink it. It's for use as a solvent.

You can only get so close to measuring ABV by shaking the jar. LMAO

“ …he pushed that side and got some fame in the end.”
And he got it, didn’t he? How many mentions of his name and his recipes are in this forum, on the ‘net’, not to mention the repeated references on “that show?”
