On youtube you can find a channel called "one piece at a time distilling" - he is a fountain of useful information as he is a professional distiller but he also talks home distilling related things.
He partnered with some local American manufacturer to create the submarine vessel boiler - it connects to a air compressor to agitate your wash the entire time so that you can distill on grain. The shape is important though, you cant do this with a normal round vessel.

How does the shape of the boiler effect compressed air from moving the mash. Square corners can slow it down but a injector design could elevate flaw in boiler shape.
I believe this has promise if your doing thick mashes. Some feel it might be explosive,if you feel that way add co2 to the compressor inlet.

Interesting stuff fir sure and I can go 100% co2 but I am not too worried about explosions as I figure you only need let it roll until it heats to 80* or so.
Thanks guys I will let you all know

Re: Agitation of wash
With the right compressor you can also use it to age by compression and vacuum.

Re: Agitation of wash
Do you guys actually prefer fermenting and stripping on the grain? That would seem to be the #1 reason to need agitation during stripping. I don't do a lot of all grain mashes, but from what I've read, most prefer to ferment off the grain. They say they prefer doing it that way due to the flavor of the end product. It makes me curious if this 'agitation of mash' is primarily for convenience or specifically a preference of the flavor of the end product?

I ferment on grain and distill off grain scorch once and you will not want to roll the dice again. If I upgrade to a steam or jacketed rig I will revisit my protocolSalt Must Flow wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 11:35 am Do you guys actually prefer fermenting and stripping on the grain? Re: Agitation of wash
Using steam seams much easier and quieter. I would hate to listen to my compressor the entire time I was stripping.
Re: Agitation of wash
I use my little steam jacket but don't bother stirring, maybe it makes sense for large batches.

Funny this thread came up. I’ve literally been watching his videos none stop for 5 hours.
I know Ozark Stills deph “the shocker” was recently posted and there were questions about its efficacy. But these guys are making some pretty wicked stuff. And it’s Purdy.
Here’s one of the videos. 1.075OG Rye Mash. Literally a dime size scorch and due to user error.

Did you watch the video? He says once it starts boiling the air wasn't needed.WaterTechnics wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 5:26 pmBut if it’s boiling the agitation is there and wouldn’t need to keep running the air no?

Using air after heat-up wasn't the point of using air at all.

Re: Agitation of wash
If that guy was smart, he'd put the compressor outside and only run the air line indoors. A lot of people build an insulated box to keep their air compressor more silent outdoors.

He also has a pod cast. And his guest list is impressive. Plenty of heavy hitters on his show.
Not sure how many platforms carry it but it is on Spotify.
The gin segment with Fernando Plata goes way esoteric.

Nope, I only posted it jk Salt. I did watch it along with many others. My response to subbrew was rhetorical.Salt Must Flow wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 9:54 pmDid you watch the video?
