What causes a soapy smell in distillates and how can it be prevented or corrected in home distillation?

if you can tell what wash or mash, what yeast, how the ferment went, what with and how it was distilled, will give more information for your question to be answered

Soap is made with carbonates or hydroxides, ie - chemical bases. So, I would suspect that the “soapy smell” you notice in your distillates are from some of these ions (the “basic” chain of the chemical) carrying through to your distillate.
How did you treat your brewing water before fermentation? Did you dump a lot of pH correcting “stuff” into your fermenter to attempt to avert a pH crash, as in a sugar wash ferment?
Also, excessively “hard” well water can have very high concentrations of alkaloid products in it that could be the source of your “soapy” products.
I would suspect the water and/or the water treatment as the problem, not necessarily the type of wash or even how you distilled it, including how you made your cuts. So, double check your water quality before brewing.

Proofing spirits down quickly and with large values (high proof dropped down to 40% ABV etc) can also create soapy character.
The French brandy industries practice a process known as 'Petits Eaux' (Small Water) where they take barrel aged water and proof the brandy down slowly over months and sometimes years. The idea that this avoids shocking the spirit and creating a soapy profile.
