My favorite Manhattan is the Perfect Manhattan: 2oz rye, .5oz each sweet and dry vermouth (something high quality, I’ve been using Ransom) and orange bitters with a maraschino cherry.
I experimented with the Dark Manhattan variations. But concluded I prefer the aperitif by itself ha. What do people think? Classic, Perfect, Dark? Maybe something new, something I haven’t heard about?

In my opinion, the Manhattan is perfectly named. Just like its namesake, it sounds sophisticated and appealing, but once was more than enough for me. Anything positive about it can be found elsewhere without the unpleasant aspects.

So for me, the perfect Manhattan is anything other than a Manhattan. If we’re talking about a whiskey cocktail, I’ll go for a fairly dry old fashioned.

Generally I prefer an old fashioned as well, however sometimes I just don’t want the sugar and a Manhattan is my go to. I like a perfect best, black second and a Brooklyn probably third. When I’m in New Orleans the go to is a Vieux Carré.

Now there’s a drink that’s been brutalized. Whatever happened to a dash of bitters muddled with a cube of sugar and a spritz of soda. rabbit ear optional? Now a days it’s got orange and cherry and all sorts of garbage. Blah

Haha. Tell us how you really feel Brother!
Personally, I prefer an old Fashioned over a Manhattan, but when I do order or make one, it's a classic.
When I make Old Fashioned's I have come to like a bourbon barrel maple syrup over a muddled sugar cube or simple syrup for the sweetness, and occasionally I smoke them.
