Vapor only grams to liter ratio

Has anyone put together a weight to liter ratio list of what it takes to achieve a similar profile from maceration to vapor only? I've got to assume you need quite a bit more botanicals if you're doing vapor path only.
So if it takes 20g per liter via maceration, what is approximate of equivalent weight if you're doing vapor only?
I'm sure this is going to vary by the botanical, but just looking for a rule of thumb to get me close.
Thanks.

are you using GNS/neutral or refluxing low wines through the botanicals?

GNS diluted down

I've never done a side by side, but I don't allow for any difference.
Both methods will louche for me without some dilution.
When using a Carter Head, I keep the output a lot slower than when the botanicals are in the pot, taking six hours minimum. Bombay take even longer when running their Carter Head.

For 10 gallons (38 liter) @ 40% vapor infused Gin
Juniper 255 grams
Coriander 100-130 grams
Grains of Paradise 21 grams
Cardimom 12 grams
options:
Cinnomon (cassia) 10 grams
Angelica 10 grams
Orris 11 grams
Fennel 3 g
Grams per liter:
Juniper 22.5
Coriander 11.5
Cardamom .25
cinnamon 2.5
Overall you're looking for 20-35 grams per liter
the formula I follow:
x-Juniper
x/2-Corriander
x/10-Angelica, cassia, grains of paradise
x/100-Cardamom, orris, ginger
Like Chris said, run it slower on a pot still. The last run I did took seven hours. Maybe a little too slow, I don't know. Also, using a gin head, insulate that sucker with some towels or whatever you have. Let me know if this helps!

Thanks fellas, so it would seem that the 20-40g per liter is still the same whether you macerate or do vapor only.
Thanks for that BP, I'll have to try it.

I would leave out the orris and fennel, it’s good but not necessary. As well as the Angelica. Maybe the cinnamon too, but I like it more than the other three.

Another question. Is there an ideal range abv for vapor extraction?

Orris is used as a fixitave in gin it's contribution to overall flavor is small imo.
Most gins contain it for that reason.
Orris has also been used as a fixative in the perfume industry for hundreds of years.
I've read stuff that says that there is absolutely no scientific evidence that it fixes flavours or smell in gin or perfume.
Having said that I use it in my gin and will continue to do so.

Yes, that is why I used it. But I can detect its flavor in my finished product, and that is why I’ll leave it out next time. But what I have found that helps blend flavors without adding a strong flavor itself, is grains of paradise. I suppose with no evidence to support ideas, really leaves it up to you.
I’ve been leaning towards a more lean botanical bill. Sometimes less is better. I’ve been out of the gin game for four years, so I've been refreshing myself on the subject

Not that I am aware of, someone smarter than me will have to answer. If I was debating between a refluxed vapor vs pot still vapor, I’ll go with the pot still. It comes out around 70% with plenty of flavor

Cool, thanks

I’m not saying it is needed but when I was logging my tasting notes jar by jar, I recall detecting Orris root in the product collection at the very end of a run, just before I started detecting tails. I can’t say that I notice it in the final product.

I’m scratching out my next gin run for 10 gallon still charge.
Juniper 255 grams
Coriander 130 g
Grains of paradise 21 g
Cardamom 10 g
Cassia 10 g
Angelica 10 g
Looking at 11.5 g/l. About Half the “recommended” weight per liter, as my last recipe. Which came out with plenty of flavor. I might scale this down a little, but I need five gallons just to cover the element.

You must be drinking your gin straight , no mixer.
I can't see using half quanties making for a flavorfull GnT.

I'd rather err on the side of too much flavor, then dilute it with neutral to get the intensity I like.

Five gallons is a lot to have under an element, especially when it's barely covered. Watch out for stratification.

It might be closer to 3.5-4 but everything works well. I’ll have to get an official measurement.

Yes, I’m a bit surprised. Looking at my old notes it’s all I used. But they are old notes so I don’t remember everything I was doing. it is a flavorful gin.
Maybe I should just go ahead and double the botanicals, I would rather nail the distillation than dilute after. But won’t know til I try

Just to clarify in my thick head, is the weight of botanical per litre of spirit (known alcohol in the wash) or calculated using the total volume of wash? Thanks in advance.

It would be per liter of spirit. I typically charge my boiler with 40% abv of a finished neutral to make a gin.
