Off Grid

Post by Bushman »

I have been in the San Juan Islands for the last 11 days with the last 4 at a work party at a friends place on 40 acres. Sitting in the barn for over 20 years was this old 40s military truck. It over heated but we got it to run.

I imagine that truck could be a lot of fun to fix up.

They made over 613,427 Jeeps, easily more than a quarter million 3/4 ton trucks (sort of like the one you show) and about 762,750 โ€œdeuce and a half's" (2.5 ton trucks with tandem rear axles ) between 1941 and 1945. Most of them were given away or just abandoned after the war. Tons and tons of trucks, tanks and ammunition still loaded aboard supply ships in transit, was simply shoved overboard into the middle of the ocean.

I hear that almost any old military rust bucket from that era, is now commanding ludicrous prices today.

Hats off if โ€œlax building permits and cheap rural landโ€ are true in that area. Much of Colorado has long since been discovered. (Eagle county - Vail, Pitkin county โ€“ Aspen, and San Miguel county โ€“ Telluride).. I lived for 20 years on the western slope of that state โ€“ in La Plata county. Unfortunately land and taxes there are anything but cheap. For the last 40 years the conceited building department has considered itself to be some kind of deity, that can do no wrong.

Good luck.

I don't think you can get a bank loan to buy bare land.

I bought bare land and built a farmhouse, but I only used cash.

After construction was done and we had lived in the house for ten years, we got home insurance and then our bank offered us a loan on the house.

This idea really appeals to me. I haven't built anything recently; age is one reason but the cost of building materials is the bigger reason.
Skylights never have been cheap. I might build a chicken house or lean to shed โ€“ just to see how well this idea works... Might consider an upgrade to a glass bottle though; should outlive a cheesy plastic water bottle by a long shot....
