Tea urn boiler

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

Tea urn boiler

Post by MooseMan »

I built a small stock pot still for a friend a while ago, and he's had many happy hours running it on a hot plate in his kitchen, making bourbon and rum.
But just as I expected, he's now outgrown it as he has to strip 4 times to empty a 25l fermenter.

So he messages me saying he's got hold of a 20l tea urn (A catering water boiler if you're not in the UK I guess) and can I please make it into a boiler for him.

It's not ideal, but it's a means of being able to strip larger volumes for his pot, and he can bypass the electrics underneath himself, to have it switched directly for a permanent boil, and run it from a voltage controller.

It's got a tap, chrome plated brass with a brass filter inside the tank, so that's got to come out, it's got a lid with a plastic handle, so that's got to go, it's full of baked on scale from crap water, and it's got vents in the top.

It was a really simple job to sort out really.
Bashed the vents flat, cut a section of scrap pipe open to make a little plate and soldered it inside to block them.

Removed the tap and silicone seal, cleaned up the hole both sides, filed a groove in a short section of 15mm copper and added an end stop to seal the hole. (He might swap this out for a stainless valve if he gets one)
