Hi all and welcome from New Zealand.
I'm completely new to the hobby, but after visiting a local brew shop I spent the last month or so reading and researching. And the more I read the more questions I have. So bare with me, I'll have a lot of questions for making my first vodka, jin and because I'm originally Bulgarian, my first rakia/grappa

Be wary of the advice from your local HBSs as it is in their best interest to sell you as much as they can, regardless of whether or not you need it.

Welcome aboard.

As NZChris said, HBSs will try to sell you whatever they can, and like to push things you probably dont need. Its not that they are trying to steer you wrong, they just have a job to do and may not know any better than what the manufacture tells them to say.
Lots of good deals to be had if you have a good scrappie near by.

Yep, I'm always wary of salespeople. As much as I hate this, I'm in sales myself

I'm checking the local FB sales and second hand sites. I'm not in a hurry, so I can wait for a good deal to come up. I'm not building anything myself for now. I'll start with some off-the-shelf product and see how it goes. At least that's the strategy for now.

Welcome to the club . If there's anything at that brew shop I would definitely say to stay clear of is the turbo yeast. It's posted here countless times. A simple easy to find bread yeast is a much better place to start.

Further to that there are plenty of yeasts far more suited to our hobby than turbo. Ther are plenty of whisk(e)y yeasts, distillers' such as DADY, of course the wine yeasts for fruits, and the range put out by Angel and others. Beer yeasts can also play a big part.
