Avast There Me Hearties

Post by Pugwash »

I'm a keen homebrewer and winemaker somewhere in Scotland. I'm here to learn how to make rum, whisky and gin. Mainly to get the quality Wifey and I like to drink but also to save the £26 a litre that spirits cost here. I have a modified Burco tea urn which I make all grain beer with. Solar panels provide my power and a voltage regulator controls the feed to the Burco. I'm hoping to broaden my hobby to include making spirits safely without breaking the bank.

Welcome, i use solar panels to keep my batteries on my boat charged while on anchor. Would love to see your set up posted in the proper thread section.

Welcome and 🍻. Nothing is More satisfying for the home distiller (IMO). Than making a safer to drink and (JMO) Cheaper too. I don't count my time. I spend time on all things I like. And..... this is probably the one I like the most. Cya down the rabbit hole.

Welcome from the other end of the UK Pugwash.

I recently modded a tea urn to make a still boiler for a friend, very easy and it's working a treat for him.

Enjoy the forum.

Thanks Yummyrum, I like Lambs Navy rum, Laphroaig whisky and the gin is for Wifey. I've so much learning to do before I get near the practical side of this hobby that swaps might be a while away. Safely making something safe to drink is the first priority - the niceties will come later. A simple electric pot still is probably where I'm headed.

Cheers Rusty, I've been in this place a few times over the years but Wifey has never been comfortable with the idea of me operating an illegal still on site. However the UK homebrew retailers are all offering air stills etc. and I've convinced her that the authorities won't get involved provided I don't tell and don't sell. I make enough smells mashing for my beers that I don't think anyone will notice.

Thanks Bushman, I'll do that in due course. The beer forum I frequent is very loose about going off topic, hijacking other folks topics and posting in the wrong places, I'll try and be disciplined here.

Thanks Bradster, I agree, if I factored in my time my beer would be very expensive, but I don't, brewing is a hobby I find pleasure in doing, hopefully stilling will be too.
