Gday, have just started getting into distilling.
Did a lot of beer brewing (and drinking of) while at uni a decade ago. Flatting at otago uni with a collection of science students was good.

I'm a geologist by trade, day job is running a geotech testing laboratory. So measuring things to the nth degree is normal.
Other hobbies are hunting, reloading and machining/light fabrication.
Looking at that, I like measuring things it seems.

I was given a wee Euro 5 column still (5L capacity) did 4 washes through that following the spirits unlimited booklet.
Since then I picked up a T500 copper reflux package second hand, while doing the first run in that I stumbled across this forum and have been reading "until my eyes bleed"
Lots of very good information and leaning to be done on here!

Cheers

Welcome to the club 🍻. You won't be needing your micrometer here.

At this point, whisky and fairly sweet liqueurs for the cook.

Hey man. You can do a lot worse than getting straight into some UJSSM from the Tried and True section. That tastes pretty good after six months and it gives you something real to drink while you have a go at some slightly more complicated stuff. Places like PGG Wrightsons are pretty good for stuff like cracked corn and blackstrap molasses (if you felt like dabbling in a rum). Good luck out there!

Thanks for that! My T500 has a reflux copper column. I've been looking at putting down a Ted's FFV brew after xmas. I would like to get the hang of making a very clean neutral spirit initially. The ideal of a proper mash for a whisky or rum is tempting, but small steps!

I think Homer Simpson summed it up, "aim low, achieve your goals and avoid disappointment."
