New member intro

Post by JustNiceWhiskey »

Hey folks, thanks for having me. I've been working through the intro guides bit by bit, you all are an incredible fount of knowledge. I'm interested in distilling primarily whiskeys, though I like the idea of adding interesting flavors to neutral spirits as well. Right now I'm waiting for my amazon 8 gal still to arrive, and in the meantime trying to do as much research as I can while starting a batch of Birdwatchers in my fermentor. I'm sure I'll have questions, but I promise to do as much previous-post-searching as possible before asking, once again, how to re-invent the wheel.

Welcome to the forum.

A bit of a shame you didn't introduce yourself earlier and speak about still choices before you pressed the buy button, but it's not the end of the world.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it here, there is a LOT of information on whiskeys!

Yeah that doesn't surprise me at all. I was pretty sure, even hitting that button, that it wasn't exactly an ideal entry point. I figure I will do a few runs to see if it still grabs me, then start poking around here for still recommendations. We're moving in the next year or so, and don't have a ton of extra space at the moment, so I liked the more temporary option.

Welcome to the forum.
The birdwatches will be a great start to fermenting, and make a good sacrificial run for your still. Did you get a pot still or a reflux? Either way, there are many threads and plenty of people here that can help you to get the best out of it. Enjoy the rabbit holes, there are many.

There are SO many. I've been working through the new distillers reading lounge, looking forward to covering this thing in flour paste, while re-watching the Still It video on his birdwatchers batch.

Hey man. On your whiskey journey UJSSM is really, truly a great place to start. If you follow the instructions - and ferment for a decent while - it’s so tasty for a sugarhead. I just made my latest batch and was so happy with it. Anyway, welcome and good luck out there.

Thanks brother, I'm excited to start a UJSSM soon as I'm definitely more interested in whiskey. I wanted a little practice before I started a multi-generational recipe that, let's be honest, I'm likely to mess up somewhere along the way

“ covering this thing in flour paste”

You’ll find rye flour makes a better seal and is easier to work (before it cooks). Pretty soon you’ll want to move to couplers or triclamps.
Double, Double, toil and trouble. Fire Burn and pot still bubble.
