pH of Common Liquids for "Calibrating" pH Paper

Post by Bee »

The pH of mashes/washes is very important not only for conversion, but for fermentation and even for distilling as well. For conversion, the pH range is relatively narrow for enzymes, but can also affect conversion when using malt. Improper pH, usually crashes toward toward the acidic side, can halt fermentation.

So, to help you calibrate your Mk I eyeball, here is a list of common, relatively uniform products that you can dip your pH/litmus paper in to get an idea of what you are looking at when you dip it into your mash. The color codes on the side of the litmus box are nice, but glossy doesn't seem to perfectly match the paper in my eyes. You can also use this list as a sanity check for electronic pH meters.

Please feel free to add confirmed products to this list.
