Weird tasting distillate

Hey guys. Ill try to keep it as short as possible. I did an AG mash 80% corn 20% distillers malt from Northern Brewer. Ratio was about 55lbs corn to 15 pounds malt. The finished drink tastes smokey. Thats the best way I can describe it. It doesnt smell burnt but tastes like it was smoked. The malt I got wasnt marketed as having any smoking or peat or anything. I checked my boiler up and down inside and out and found no evidence of burnt grain. I double strain when I charge it anyway. I run on a gas burner.

The only thing I did different was occasionally squeeze the mash if it would gum up my filter as I was pouring it in. Any idea with that information what this funky taste would be?
