Is a reducer required?

Post by CCHHHHHHO »

Hi All,

In most still builds, I usually see, say, a 2-4" column which is at some point reduced to a smaller diameter after the column. Is this functional or just to save money with narrower copper, and to facilitate collection from a small diameter? Aside from the narrow collection point, I've heard functional descriptions like vapour turbulence and mixing etc.

How critical is the reduction? In terms of cost savings, it's actually cheaper for me to use just 3" pipe, since I already have it. I'd like to build the entire still with 3", and include a 3" shotgun condenser, ending in a 3" to 1cm barb immediately before collection. The plan is for a modular still that can be reconfigured between CCVM and pot.

Will the single diameter cause any problems?
