Shattered glass (hydrometer) in my UJSSM

Post by JeDesto »

As the old sages said in the book of "Hey, what could go wrong?"

Well shit.

I started a batch of UJSSM fermenting. A week later I went to go check the specific gravity. After getting a reading, I used the hydrometer to give the fermentation a swirl and *CrXsHgH* the hydrometer shatters in my hands... I rinse the powdered glass off of my hands and pluck a couple of large glass shards off the top... The bulk of the razor sharp hydrometer is still in there, fermenting away.

In any other cooking scenario, logic dictates that this is a lost cause. Toss everything and have better luck next time. Am I wrong in wondering if it's not? There is zero chance of glass being transferred in vapor.. right? I'd be more confident if the whole point of a UJSSM wasn't to run the same (now glass tainted) batch over and over...

I should probably just start over.. right? :(
