Funny conversation with Don this morning. He owns a paint shop here in town and I really don't know how many trucks and trailers he's painted for me over the past 25 years. He's quite crippled up now and has guys do the work for him. We were talking about urethane paint and he said the stuff he used years ago would have the nerves in his arms tingling by the end of the day. I said that might explaine why he's all crippled up and behind a desk now and not painting.
He said " well that certainly didn't help, but things started to go bad when I spent 4 days at Woodstock!"
Me "The Woodstock? New York 1969?"
Then Don procedes to tell us how he and 2 cousins hitch hiked to Woodstock for "a concert they had heard about" when he was 15.
His aunt had driven them across the boarder into the States and dropped them off at the first town they came to. They hitch hiked to the concert and it took them 10 days to get home. He said "I was probably a little harder on my body for the next 20 years than I should have been"
After the story and a few laughs the youg fella that had come over to pick me up, and had herd the conversation, said " you guys that grew up in the 60's and 70's are so lucky, I just turned 30 and couldn't come close to a story like that"
I told him the late 60 were a great time to grow up, 70's were a great time to be a teenager, Cocain and politics ruined the 80's and shit just has never been the same.
It dawned on me that Don is the only person I've known that went to Woodstock.
I certainly would not want to be 15 or even 30 today.
Edit: I missed a couple of details from Don's story
His Dad had told him he couldn't go, so he knocked the screen out of his bedroom window at night and hitch hiked to the aunts place.
The Aunt agreed to drive them if it was OK with his Dad. He assured her he was there with Dad's blessing.
The Aunt dropped the boys off with bus fare to get to concert , the boys figured if the hitch hiked they would have more party money.
"Dad was pretty pissed when I got home,... he stayed that way for quite a while" Haaa!
