I know others have experimented with triticale and there are a couple commercial products. I’ve never tried any, but this season triticale whiskey was my experiment.
For those that are unfamiliar triticale is a hybrid between wheat and rye. It isn’t a rare grain, but has limited commercial use, most commonly grown for grazing or animal feed.
Part of my farming interest is attempting to grow as many different grains as I can for my region. This variety of winter triticale was called Tulus and was planted last fall in conjunction with winter peas and harvested at the beginning of August.
I have old “cheap” equipment. This JD 40 is from the 70s. It’s fun to drive, easy to fix and doesn’t do anything fast.
After harvest the grain is cooled and dried with aerators. Once winter gets here and I have more time it needs to be further cleaned. I have an old clipper mill.
Clean grain. It’s not perfect, but for distilling purposes it’ll do.
