Weevils...
Damn things in my corn. I've had a few before but this time there were more of them. Didn't see them until they started crawling up throught the crushed grains. One after the other. I proceeded to mash in, figuring they'll die in the hot water and I doubt they will add much flavor to the wash. If they do, it will probably taste just like chicken...
But I still have half a bag of corn left, which will be have more of these buggers. Should I go sift through the remining corn to try to remove them, sounds like a hopeless task? Or just continue to have the bag separated from all the other grain bags I have? It wasn't an infestation but at least 20 of them in 5kg/10lb of corn.
Disgusting creatures I don't want inside my house. Glad I store the corn in the garage.

Time to make Weevil Soup!
I'd grind the rest and boil it up. Over time, they're only going to eat more corn, and there's always the risk that they make it into your other supplies.

If you have room in a freezer you can put the grain in there. It will kill them, but probably not the eggs. But keep it in the freezer until use will keep it in the same condition it is.

Re: Weevils...
That's what I did. Went through the bag, got rid of the ones I could see and put all the corn in smaller plastic bag that I put in the freezer. The problem is that I have 30 kg more from the same source. If one bag's got it... And I certainly don't have room for 30kg more corn in the freezer, especially now that I am putting my plums in the freezer too. I'll use the corn I've got in the freezer first and then rinse and repeat.
I don't mind bugs but I don't like them crawling in what's to be my liquor.

Re: Weevils...
It depends on how quickly you intend to use the remaining grains. I once had 50 lbs of infested milo (sorghum). I poured it all into a plastic storage bin, flooded it with water, gently stirred, and all the bugs floated to the top and were poured off. It being summer at the time, I spread the wet grain out on a sheet on my deck and it air/sun dried in no time. That stabilized the grain long enough for me to work through at my usual pace.

Store the grains inside a container that can be closed off and first inject CO2 into it. CO2 is heavier than air and will therefore displace the air out of the container.

Now there’s a good use for all that fermenter gas .Homesweethome wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2026 11:20 am Store the grains inside a container that can be closed off and first inject CO2 into it. CO2 is heavier than air and will therefore displace the air out of the container.

Re: Weevils...
I've found weevils or flour bugs in a bag of flour that was not opened. Somehow the eggs survive the grinding process. Also have had bugs in rice and wheat. I now keep each bag I have in a separate sealed container or in a 5 gallon to bucket to limit the spread.
It's easier to manage now that I always use the whole bag of un-malted grain when I mash. The only partial bags I keep in stock are malt,

A 50# bag of steamed crimped corn had weevils in it. Took it outside and vacuumed packed it in 10# bags with a hefty scoop of diatomaceous earth. There were hundreds in each bag. Stuck the 10# bags in black 55 gallon trash bags and left them in the July sun. The temperature reached 157+ degrees in the bag daily. Took over a week to kill them. The corn was not used. Couldn’t do it. It was a total infestation, more or less wanted to see how to kill them. They are tough creatures.
