Aluminum rivets on stainless pot

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

Aluminum rivets on stainless pot

Post by rectifier »

I got a stainless stock pot for a medium small sized pot still, 15L. It's all stainless, except the handles are riveted on with Al rivets.

Should I drill them out for copper rivets, or just not worry? They will be exposed to vapors at >60%... trouble?

I wouldn't worry. You can drill them out if you want, but lots of people use aluminium boilers (myself included) and I've never heard of any bad consequences.

The problem with aluminum comes from it's reactivity with acids. I'm assuming the handles are above the liquid level, and therefore should not contact the acidic wash. The vapor is ever-so-slightly acidic, but I think that would fall into the "don't worry about it" catagory.
