A liebig condenser is a simple condenser consisting of two pipes where one is inside the other. Vapor is routed through the inner pipe and water is routed through the outer pipe. The water cools the vapor which condenses and drips out.
Design
A common design for a liebig condenser is a 3/4" pipe outside a 1/2" pipe, 24" or 36" long.
Optimizing the liebig
- Run the cooling water in a counter-flow configuration.
- Add turbulence to the water jacket by twisting and soldering a thick copper wire around the inner tube.
