How to Pack a Column

Post by Vodka4me »

Hello,

I am about to run my still through its first reflux run. I have done a couple of stripping runs already but do not have the column packed for this. I have bought stainless steel scrubbers for use as my packing material. I am running a 1 1/4" column.

My question is how tightly do I pack the column? I guess that tighter packed would have more places for the vapour to condense on, but too tightly might restrict the vapour flow. Is there a rule of thumb for how tightly to pack?

Thanks!

Tight but not tight. you want to be able to breath freely through it after its packed.

Snorkel*... i.e. under water with a tube to the surface to breathe. From the previous post sounds like I want the column packed enough I could snorkel with it and not drown.

Ok I get it now! You'll have to excuse me I'm a little slow. I always tell people "I was born an idiot, I've excepted the fact I'm an idiot. It's everyone else that has a problem with it". Carry on then!!
