Vodka with a pot still ???

Post by SpicedRummy »

Hi, I have been doing a lot of reading , and either I have just been looking in the wrong places or something else I've been doing wrong. Anyway, I have a pot still, and I've done a few run's of the sweetfeed Whiskey recipe and a couple of Rum runs that I really like. Anyway, I have some relatives that like Grey Goose vodka, and was wondering if it is possible to make a decent vodka with a pot still?" I know that potstills are better for Whiskey and Rum, and thats why I built it. I am not a vodka drinker. If it is possible to do this can you point me to good recipe. I really apprecate all of the help I've gotten from this site, I just wish I would have found it before I got into this great hobby

Tito's is a fine tasting vodka made fron potstills, Tito runs it 7 times. Try diluting and rerunning till you like the taste.

Sure. You can make vodka in a pot still. A bunch of people here do it.

With a pot still, you can make vodka, but not neutral.

Check the tried and true for some of the more "neutral" recipes (Gerber comes to mind, but there are others), and run them three (or more times). You'll still have a bit of "grain" taste and feel in it, but it'll be vodka, nonetheless.

Hope that helps.

Many use Birdwatchers and or winos to make a vodka in a pot still. With good outcomes. But I'm not a big fan of them. I would recommend all bran or Gerber. Or even UJSSM. Something with a grain. I find the grains lend to a better tasting end product. I know vodka isn't suppose to have a taste. I call BS. They all do have a taste. So why not have that taste be am enjoyable one. I find the sugar washes like Birdwatchers to be very medicinal in flavor. Which is not enjoyable to me.

Run it as many times as it takes to get a product you are happy with. Diluting with clean water to 30% for each run. making really tight hearts cuts.

As Mr. Piss has indicated a good vodka is not a neutral, it does have flavor, and so a good grain base is essential. I have made vodka with a pot still numerous times and it has always been based on all grain mashes. The key is simply multiple runs through the pot until the desired product is obtained. I have multiple runs as few as four and as many as seven.

Hey bigr, how's things, good to see you around again.

What do you make for a grain base that you run through several times for vodka?
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Jimbo - Wheat is the only AG I've done specifically for vodka and it turned out nice. Since I mostly use vodka for fruit liqueurs, Mr. P's firepiss (ginger root works also), or flavored vodkas, a lot of my vodka is from AG feints so it's still grain base but a mixture of anything from corn, oats, rye, and/or barley.

I've been around Jimbo; I check in daily just don't always see anything at time I want to comment on.

Thanks for the quick replys. I suspected that it would be a multi run project, but was kind of lost as far as a starting point for a recipe. When I get ready to try it, I think I'll try the Gerber,I've been thinking of trying that one anyway. Thanks again
