Having trouble tracking down molasses

Post by Zeig »

Figured I'd post in the ND section since im a def a novice to molasses. I've checked my local Tractor Supplies and they don't have liquid molasses, I called their support and they don't offer shipping it to the store after I purchase it for free delivery. This would cause it to be double the price.

I'm wondering if there are other molasses's that may be locatable around Columbus Ohio? Any Help is appreciated, my bananas are getting super ripe!

The Cabela's in Ohio is small but it supposedly (according to their website) has a this a molasses and berry mix attractant that i've linked below. Think this would be comparable?

You could look into molasses designed for human consumption. In various forms it is used in baking; molasses sugar, black treacle, blackstrap, etc. etc.
More expensive, but it will be what you want. I have bought feed molasses that is not suitable for fermenting (tastes bad, made from beets, I think).

I buy my Rum molasses from the local restaurant supply company. They sell 1 gallon jugs of Grade A fancy molasses for $12.00 each. I know this is more than most people like to spend, but it makes a really nice rum. I also add brown and white sugar. Restaurant supply stores are a great place to get big quantities of sugar for cash as well. If you have a BJ's nearby they might have the molasses too.

how does powdered molasses by the pound convert over to recipes that call for a certain volume (liters, gallons)?

Look up feed stores in Columbus area. Most carry molasses for feeding horses and such.

A couple quick rough figures:

Blackstrap is 55% to 65% sugar
(http://ww.homedistiller.org/forum/viewt ... 40&t=18108" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow)

Powdered molasses: 4 tsp of powder = 1 tbsp. blackstrap molasses

This versatile attractant incorporates fruit, berries, molasses,

.......and other potent flavors. This would be the part of it that might be of concern, depending on what "other potent flavors" actually are, +any other additives that may be in it. A call to the MFG'er to find out what all is in it would be wise.

(.....and, it's $10/gallon +shipping) $$$

Powdered molasses from a feed store is way different. It is the solids left over from cane pressing and has most of the sugar removed. We use it for horse feed in the winter.

Baker's Powdered Molasses is 75% sugar.

I wait until I find a deal at big y , 2 16oz for 3 bucks , buy them all!!! I use 2 per 5 gallon ferment. I haven't found a better deal on fancy store bough molasses. ive experimented with more but for cost to value 2 seems to be my good number.

I've found molasses from a wholesaler to be the best value. Typically I'd pay about $32 a pail for fancy grade or (light) molasses. Look for bakery and restaurant suppliers in your area. Drop into a local bakery and sample their wares. Casually ask who supplies their molasses and if they could spare a pail until their next order.

As long as the molasses is unsulphured(and it looks like that one is) it should be finr. don't use sulphured cause no matter how hard you try it will end up as a fart smelling wash that you'd never wanna run. don't ask how i know  i get my molasses for $13.99/ gal from nmy local gfs or Gordon's Food Service. its fancy unsulphured i believe, and they have decent prices on 50lb boxes of white sugar and have 2 lb bags of red star yeast for like $7. Hopefully you've got a GFS near ya...

WOW, I don't know how i didn't think of GFS! thanks!

EDIT: The search is over! i found a TS about an hour away that caries the first molasses i was looking for (having someone driving into town pick it up on the way). And if that falls through then my local GFS has non sulfured molasses for $15 a gal.

No problem, i get all my bakers yeast and molasses from there. i also always grab sugar when I'm there and have contemplated trying corn syrup since they've got it cheap too. Also got a mop strainer today there for easier straining of my grains when racking my mashes. Prices are decent on just about everything there.
