Re: Flinty, wet stone, wet gravel note in distillate

Is it all through the run or only at the end? Sometimes I get a wet dog smell and sometimes a wet cardboard smell towards the end of my run. I guess one man's wet dog/cardboard smell could be another man's wet gravel smell. Truth be told, I haven't spent much time smelling either wet dogs or wet car...

I've heard tell them ole boys would add a molasses, burnt sugar, tobaccer juice and all kinds of other crap to fake the color of a properly aged whiskey. It covers up the nasty smell and taste of a really poorly made hooch. That tobaccer juice will give yer throat a good burn so it seems like the ho...

Re: Steam engine parts mean distillation possibilities

Welcome!

If you've got a boiler for a steam engine you might want to think about doing a steam fired pot. Never used one, but I hear they are pretty sweet. Plus with a steam engine around you have a built in excuse for a lot of the gear you'll use for stillin.

Are you talking about sealing up just for a boil, or more permanent like to store stuff? If for a boil, I second the flour paste. Really is the best stuff. I use just water and flour, no sugar or salt, get it to a consistency of between pancake batter and pizza dough. I use warm water and stir the h...

The Mrs. is up late making Pecan Pie from scratch and Devil'd Eggs. Some ways this place is better than a family. If somebody pisses ya off, you can turn off the computer and not talk to anybody for a couple weeks. When you cool down, come back, and give any old lame excuse or no excuse at all, and nobody calls you on it or gets in a huff. I've been a part of a lot ...

If it's taking that long to pull off product, I'd guess you need more fire. As for refining your likker, experiment. Pretty much anything out to the Tried and True section is going to steer you right. (The wheat germ is a good one.) Pick a simple cheap one and use it till you get your still figured...

Re: What to Expect When Fermenting

I would not call stillin exciting. Rewarding and relaxing is more like it. I like sitting out in the shed watching likker twirl into the jar. My music is the hiss of the propane, the rattle of the beads in the pot, and the likker drops into the jar. I just sit and think. I think about how I'm going ...

Just thought of this; try sending it thru a carbon filter. The carbon should sop up the cinnamon oil pretty easy. Or try freezing it and see if the cinnamon separates out that way. You're not going to get it all no matter what you do, but you should be able to knock it down to something gentler on t...

Re: fixing a spirit ???

I know that you can distill with sugar still in the wash, I did it with no problem. I ran slow so I didn't burn the sugar or carmelize it. Worried that the cinnamon will coat the inside of your rig and everything you make afterwards will hint of it. Save it for company, you never know what will wet ...

Never heard of this. The gals like it do they? When I was a little kid my gramma used to make sun tea - just a few teabags in a big jar with water and leave it out in the summer sun all day. Then we'd put it in the fridge overnight and have ice tea the next day. Do you have to heat the likker while ...

Commercial product stinks. I ramble. And I have questions..

I had a sippin shot of Jameson last night, somebody else brought it to the party. Now I haven't had a drop of commercially produced hard alcohol in 7 months since my main drinkin buddy got pregnant (my wife). Re: Pumping air into boiler good or bad?

I second the advice about NOT blowing air into your pot. What you will create is an air-fuel bomb sitting on top of 5? 10? 20? gallons of boiling liquid. That could very easily blow out a seam and spill the whole shootin match right into your lap. I think the increase in distillate you saw when you ...
