Haha. My brother and I do. We made gunpowder too. Sulfer saltpeter and charcoal and blow all sorts of stuff up. Mostly see how big s hole we could blow. Or send a sapling into the air Nice! I took it a step further. I mixed up some Potassium Chlorate and vaseline. My own plastic explosive..... :D :...

Re: yeast question
That all depends on what you want. If you want a wash that ferments out to a high abv, very quickly, then you want a turbo. If you don't care how long it takes but want a high abv, get a yeast that's rated for a high alcohol tolerance. As others will definitely say after me, read read read, do your ...

Re: Storing product in plastic
but you see, that's the real question. Just how caustic is ethanol? How caustic does it become diluted to 90%? or 80%? or 50%? What exactly, is it's effect on food grade plastic for a given strength? Point me to a website, that has this information documented, and well tested, and I'll drive the ban...

Re: Storing product in plastic
HDPE (and PDE?) are approved for use to store likker at 100 proof. Now, if anyone has scientific proof that the FDA approved method for storing likker long term is unacceptable for storing likker in the short term, I would love to see it. Without that, then, well, all it is to me is unqualified &qu...

Re: Storing product in plastic
This is the way I see it. You rebottle your product into the appropriate plastic. Put it in your checked luggage. For domestic flights, I give it a 99.99% chance of it arriving with you at your destination without any hassle. Hell, I've done it, had no problems....haven't done it on international fl...

Re: Storing product in plastic
In the USA by law you cant to reuse likker bottles . True...But, the likelihood of TSA agents knowing that is very unlikely. But I'm not one to take chances when it's so simple to avoid a potential problem. If it were me, I'd ensure the bottles I used to transport my product, were unmarked, all lab...

yes xecros you are likely right for that short time but thing is I think it would be far less conspicuous to have your drinks in say two different 1.25 ltr or smaller glass labelled bottles maybe not quite full to account for the seals being broken  I wouldn't be concerned with that, to be...

I've just done a bit of searching around concerning alcohol and plastic. Without getting into the nitty gritty details about what information I've found and where, here's my advice. considering the following: 1. 100 proof liquor is only 50% ethanol. 2. Your looking to store it while on a flight 3. t...

Re: scorched keg still bottom?
provided you didn't have cleaning chemicals inside when you ran it dry, it should be fine. Depending on how well you can clean it, you may, or may not have a burnt/scorched taste to your product, for a couple of runs. If you did have chemicals, I would clean it as best you could, then boil 2 vinegar...

Re: Hello From Roll Tide Country!!!
Hello all! I am new to the home distilling game and had a couple of questions if you don't mind. First off let me say I'm not that mechanically oriented and it appears that making a home distiller is waaaaaaaay outta my league, so I'm considering buying a pre-fabbed one. I have been looking at some...

Yep. Nailed it. I think I brewed a neutral spirit ONCE. The rest has tasted like old bread and blue cheese (x 2). I'm half-way through building a Boka now, but I think I made my condenser too big. better too big, than too small...if it's too big, you can always compensate by controlling the flow of...

Re: Coiled reflux condensor
the reason why, is because the oven gets up to very high temperatures during a cleaning cycle. high enough to turn any organic substance to powder, including caramelized sugar.Xecros wrote:does your oven have a cleaning cycle? crank up a cleaning cycle, put your coil in it, and let her rip!

So being very new to distilling I am curious. If you get more consumable alcohol from birdwatchers , why wouldn't you use it for your Absinthe too? Does it need the flavor of heads and tails to make it taste right? Just curious Crunching the numbers.... 5 gallon wash, fermented with turbo to 20%, w...

you know, I see the appeal of a keg. Stainless steel, solid contruction, but, I'll never get one. Not being able to easily get inside the can for cleaning purposes just doesn't work for me....cutting a hole in the top doesn't appeal either....
