istill open source question

This is a question for Odin. Have you ever considered open sourcing certain aspects of the istill software? I appreciate you run a business based on proprietary software and hardware, but also know how much you give to the community through forums like these. Wondering, if there was an appetite for ...

Re: Making pure whiskey

Higher opening is ok on the first run. On the second one, you want to keep on being very stable and pure throughout all factions, to keep the bad headsy and tailsy alcohols at bay, while blending associated esters over into hearts. But surely, on second run, after I’ve carefully drawn my heads and ...

Re: Making pure whiskey

Sorry, I misunderstood- thanks for clarification. With regards to the tails, can I just open the still up and run it is hard or should I take my time collecting the tales through to 82c?

Re: Making pure whiskey

Question - on first run, why I can’t I just run it hard, like a stripping run? What’s the difference between collecting feints separately and then adding it all back together in the second run?

Re: Turning good liquor into low wines again

Thanks for all the suggestions and don't worry - I'll be keeping the top shelf to myself. I understand why many of you are saying "just add some mixer" but she wants a premade drink that will keep (so not carbonated) in wine bottle sizes, so she can say "okay, I've had a bottle of &qu...

An easy sight tower mod for my boka

Okay, so I know the company is in the bad books in this forum but I was looking for an off the shelf sight tower so I could monitor my column for flooding. Thought I'd share a picture of the end result in case anyone is looking for a similar solution (or in case it's a bad idea that should be shot d...

Turning good liquor into low wines again

This might seem like a really bizarre question, but having experienced the hangover benefits of good clean spirits, my wife has requested something that is more of a wine strength. Something she can drink more of with less concern for her liver. Does anyone know of any recipes at all, that take neut...

Re: Cornflakes whiskey

On distilling 1.5, you do a strip run first. Use part of the backset from the strip run to start up gen II. Odin. Thanks Odin, but maybe I've not explained my question clearly. Because I ran 25 litres of low wines before even thinking about creating a second batch of wash, I now have the opportunit...

Re: Cornflakes whiskey

Thank you. And one last question. Using distilling 1.5 (which is a new concept to me) am I still able to use some of the backset from the first batch to create the second batch... Or should it be entirely fresh - and then I use the backset from the 1.5 batch for future batches?

Hope that makes sense.

Just thought I'd let you know that odin's easy gin was a smash hit at xmas. Of course, it was rebranded as my very own recipe. Patching' super hard gin, but Odin was the unsung hero of Christmas this year.

Re: Cornflakes whiskey

Thanks guys. Just cooking the next batch now. Also, could someone point me to some essential reading for making whiskey cuts. This is my first time away from the neutrals and just from sipping some of my first run, I can see that the cuts are going to be very different as much of the flavour came ov...

Re: Cornflakes whiskey

Just doing my first run of this at the moment. I'm using a detuned boka. Just wondering if a double distill is really necessary if I'm not using a pot still? Apologies if the answer is already contained in the thread - but I haven't seen it.

Re: A noob's observation about azeo

Glad to see my observation has sparked a discussion. I thought it might. I completely understand if you put shit in, you get shit out and that there are a host of variables, but my observation was based on constants. It was one wash, one still, one still operator, the same run, right in the middle o...

Re: A noob's observation about azeo

Absolutely. My washes are still basic and my cutting skills are still limited as my nose and pallet become more refined - I'm simply stating the case for other novices - that there is value in striving to achieve maximum purity.

A noob's observation about azeo

Anyone following my threads will see that I have been on an epic journey to get my bits and pieces boka to achieve azeo. I have finally reached that milestone and last night made an interesting observation. Throughout my research, I've seen a lot of people say on this forum something along the lines...

Re: Brewhaus boka conversion first run - low ABV

If your coil is knocking down the vapor it's doing its job, period. If you can't get azeo out of 40 inches of packing, it's too loose. Try lava rocks. They are cheap. Try marbles, great results are being had with them. I am going to switch from my next run over Christmas break. Mesh is just not tha...

Re: Brewhaus boka conversion first run - low ABV

I just wanted to follow this up. With SPP I am now hitting azeo at a steady stream without breaking a sweat. Very happy man. It floods and pukes with the slightest of changes. I had to bring the heat way down from what I was used to running at... but I'll be damned - I'm finally there. Next task, I'...

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

Sorry my mistake, I was just plucking figures out of my a** as an example. Yes, ABV was low 70s and was macerated a 43%. Still... want not, waste not. I'll stick em in the shed and run them through one day. Might make nice base for... GIN :)

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

Explain this to me: I start out with 4 litres of 40% macerated gin. I collect 1.6 litres of gin @ 60% In theory - I could have collected (using calculator on homepage) 2.53 litres at this rate, so there is just shy of a litre of perfectly good hearts in that wash. Right? Surely that is worth trying ...

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

So after making my gin, which is maturing nicely now, I dumped what was left in the boiler into a collection vessel. I assume because this is pure hearts it will redistill nicely into a neutral (once I've saved up enough). I forgot to remove the botanicals though, and they've been sat in there for 1...

Re: Needle valve upgrade - baffled

Patching, Is your needle valve lead-free brass? Those ferrules create a compression on the tubing, so I don't think you need to solder them. But you would need to reduce the 1/2" OD copper to 3/8" OD to match the valve. To assemble, put a wrap of teflon tape on the threads and tighten the...

Yes, it does have the ferrules. Any way of doing it without further soldering? Of course, I want a booze tight connection, but strength isn't paramount, as I have supports running from the column to the Liebig

Needle valve upgrade - baffled

Hey guys. Taken a couple of weeks off to do some work on the house etc. I just took delivery of a 3/8 needle valve to replace the 1/2" gate valve I've using for boka takeoff (from Amazon USA). It seems mighty small, but everything I've read suggests it will be an acceptable size. Am I right? If...

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

Thanks guys,

Just removing the cork and placing a coffee filter on top for a few hours has made a big difference. Perhaps I didn't give it enough time to air? I assumed because it was all hearts, airing wouldn't help. But it seems to be.

So about a week into my resting period and I thought I'd have a little taste. To my surprise, the flavour profile has changed... for the worse.
