Re: SSR not turning off

Found the problem. After double checking all voltages and Ohm’s across the MOSFET they were correct. So on a whim I reversed the wires on the output (pins 1and 2) one it now works as it should. There must be a diode in the MOSFET that limits the direction of current flow.

SSR not turning off

I have been building a new controller that will monitor the condenser above my flute plates. I have a pt100 thermocouple mounted in the water cooling jacket. Everything is functioning at the initialization signal. the control signal from the pid activates the SSR (SSR-25DD) which turns on the circui...

Re: New steam boiler

I usually dilute down to 35% when I'm using internal element. I figured I would just start at 40% to compensate for the additional H2O. I will see how it goes. I just cooked up another 40 gallon mash last night, easy with steam.

Re: New steam boiler

Finally getting back to this thread. The steam boiler works great. The manual needle valve also works welll It’s very easy to match the evaporation rate with the valve and no need for a float system. I do all my cooking with it and all my stripping runs as well. No need to squeeze anything. Just dum...

Re: New steam boiler

I steam strip my all grain ferments. No squeezing here. I squeezed one batch about a year ago and decided that was the first and last time I was doing that. Up to this point I have been using one keg for a steam boiler and the second for the stripping the grain. I also use it to cook my grains. Next...

Re: New steam boiler

Originally there was a copper union for the steam line connection. Swapped it out for ferrule but forgot to remove nut before I soldered in place. The tubing it high temperature silicone tubing that is the manometer. Fool proof pressure relief valve and vacuum break!

New steam boiler

I thought I would post some pictures of my new steam generator. I can’t say the idea was mine as I have picked it from sources on the net. I’m using a design similar to the one made by still dragging. Starting with a small pressure vessel I bought on Craigslist, then I had my welder put a couple of ...

Re: Use steam rig to increase run volume

Here is a picture of the set up I used, the steam arm the is feeding the second pot. I use this for all my on the grain strips as well. The design of the tip really minimizes the noise made in the thumper. It forces the steam bubbles to be small and widely dispersed. Its a low crackling, hissing sou...

Re: Use steam rig to increase run volume

I was not looking to increase run time rather to increase the volume of the run. This is how I ran it. 13 gallons in the primary boiler 6 gallons in the thumper, all low wines at 35%. I heated the primary to 160 degrees then removed heat. Plugged in the second controller (only have one 220 plug) and...

Re: Use steam rig to increase run volume

I do have two controllers and elements. I could put heating elements in both. The paracidic keg has a 2” ferrule installed that is currently capped. I put it in just in case the situation arrived that I might need to use it as a boiler. What do you all think of running heat in both in that daisy cha...

Re: Use steam rig to increase run volume

Interesting I hadn’t thought about a flooding situation in the parasitic boiler. I was planning on putting 7 gallons in that vessel and we in the primary. Do you think it would still flood before coming to take off temperature?

Re: Use steam rig to increase run volume

So I'm going to go ahead and do the whiskey run in the manner discussed. Here is another question for the discussion. When I run the low wines I get approximately 2.5 gallons per stripping run. Of this 2.5 gallons the first gallon is clean higher proofed ethanol and the subsequent low wines of that ...

Re: Use steam rig to increase run volume

No the only heat would be applied to the main still. The thumper would be just that and heated from the ethanol coming from the main still. I effectively would not get anything off the second “thumper” until it came to temperature. I have read of thumper use, just not in the manor I am thinking. I’m...

Re: Use steam rig to increase run volume

Well, I have one day next week I can run whiskey. Think I will try the double set up unless I hear from someone who can advise me otherwise. I have not heard anything negative about running the two with low wines. It would sure save me some time to do them together. This is an all grain ferment low ...

Use steam rig to increase run volume

I have a stem setup similar to Michigan Cornhusker and had a question about using it to increase a whiskey run size. Would it be feasible to load the main boiler with low wines and the steam pot also with low wines to increase the volume that one could run at a time. The reason for the question, I h...

Yes 1.03 with the Hydrometer. it seemed that the initial wild yeast start just screwed me all up. At least that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Well I pitched some DADY no further activity. Increased temperature no activity, adjusted ph no activity. The wash will not move off 1.03. Re: All grain advice

All I initially used was DADY with UJSSM and it seemed to ferment fine. Then came the all grain and I'm looking for flavor profile for good bourbon. Some of the reading I did here suggested the US-05 so I though I would give it a try. What is it you do not like about the DADY? Was it off flavor, fer...

Re: All grain advice

Great information Zapata. On that thought then it would make sense to limiting the stirring during the mashing process?. I use a drywall mixer on a 1/2 inch drill during the mashing process and probably stir to much. I steam cooking so I really don't have to worry about scorching I just mix it up be...
