T500 issues

Hi all,

Very sorry if this has been covered before.

I use the T500 still with the classic 8 yeast producing around 4800ml of 94%. I have very inconsistent results. I've been trying to identify hearts for my barrelled spiced rum which has worked reasonably well.

My questions are-

can I redistill the tails as this usually has a burnt taste???

How much hearts should I expect out of 4800mls ish???

1) If you scorched the wash, boiling it again won't get rid of the "burnt taste". You've got to pay better attention to your processes to reduce the "sludge" from the boiler.

2) How much hearts.....well, did you use a Tried & True recipe? Maybe then we can help you with your question. Otherwise...we simply don't have enough details to predict YOUR performance. Sorry.

Hi Studda

The classic 8 yeast your using is a turbo yeast designed to make a high yield of poor quality alcohol.

As SS states we suggest using one of the Tried and True recipe's which we can assist you with. It will reduce the volume per run but the quality will increase by so much.

Unfortunately until you stop using turbo's or at least reduce your wash abv to 10% or less it can be difficult to make cuts as the off flavours from stressing the yeast carry through the whole run.

I know these are not the answers your looking for but I hope it helps you going forward.

Sounds like scorching. one of the few things that re-distilling can get rid of. Like the others have said, it's hard to guess what went wrong without knowing the details.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll have look at sludge etc and the Tried and Tested.
