Meet Candy - my stripper

Post by kaziel »

Finally I've build it and I'm very proud of it. Please have a look and don't focus to much on mess in the background. Comments, sugestions welcome as usual.

Is that a condenser in the making or a lyne arm? I didn't see any water inlet/outlet. That is definitely a very good basic pot still.

Yes, condenser is dimroth one. I wilk post some pics tomorrow. This is a corrugated pipes made from stainless steel. In addition i've stuffed front with some ss scrubbers to block vapours a little bit. During run It was knocking down 1.2 kW. This type of condenser can be use as reflux one or as in my case as condenser for pot still. I didn't want to do something new i'm a huge fan of reusing stuff. Inside column there is some cooper to improve sulfur removal. When i will finish electric setup for my 50 liters keg i will use this condenser to bigger striping still. At around 1kW i was getting a small solid stream coming out. I will measure flow next run. Got 15l of old wine. It's not rotten or anything I just don't like that kind of taste so maybe I will give it a go. Also got 5kg of smoked barley so next in pipeline is a whiskey mash to be stripped. Currently I also got 4l 75abv raw whiskey plan is to have around 6 liters of this single malt stuff and do pot still run with proper cuts for the product. Will keep you updated.

Kaziel, that looks like it will do the job.

If you use the same rig for your spirit run, you will want to add some copper in the vapor path to help clean up your spirit.

I use a roll of copper mesh inserted into the riser on my stainless rig when I need to use copper. I know some folks use bits of cut up copper pipe to the same effect. You want some copper in there somewhere.

As I was saying in my proevious post I'm using cooper in the column, also for strip runs.

Mine is similar , a keg with giant CSST condenser , has worked well for me .

that kind of condenser is very easy to use and read , I keep track of how well it is working by feeling the outside of the pipe , when I run mine the bottom part near where the alcohol drips out will be pretty cold , halfway up the pipe will be warm and further up will be too hot to touch , I also check the water temperature with my hand as it comes out of the hose to decide if i'm using the right amount of water flow .

only suggestion I would have would be adding a drain valve and fill port , makes back to back stripping runs easier

I don't want to do it. Still sometime I'm using this also for gas stove. I'm worrying about sealing when exposed to high temperatures (assuming mounting drain in bottom). Do you have some comments about this? Maybe I'm worrying over nothing here.

Actually I'm doing same thing (only did this once). Still when I'm getting pretty cold water knocking down 1.2kW seems to work fine. I'm reusing condenser from my VM system but maybe in the future I will build something more efficient. Is it ok to have water coming to condenser true straight part of tubing and coming out with spiral one? Or you are doing it other way around?

I have always used a butane gas stove to heat , on my keg the drain is not on the very bottom it is on the side of my keg as low as I could put it which means I have to tilt the keg to get the last bit of liquid out but that's much easier than disconnecting the column and then carrying a hot keg and emptying it out . I used a weldless bulkhead triclamp fitting which connects to a triclamp ball valve . the O ring which comes with the fitting was wrapped with ptfe tape and I used lots of ptfe tape on the fittings threads as well . it took quite a bit of trial and error to get the fitting in place and not leak but is well worth it for the effort it saves

silver soldering a ferrule to the side of the keg for a drain would be much stronger , I will try this on my next keg .

thats the way I have mine , it seems best this way .

Good hint. Actually I will keep it as it is. After the run i'm taking temperature isolation and after few minutes using gloves i'm empthing it to the sink.
In near future I'm planing to buy another keg for beer mashing (I don't know if this is proper wording) and for this i will instal drain velve on exact bottom. I will weld this so if i will be using ss valves with ptfe there is a chance that this will withstand gas stove since it doesn't have flame in middle.

Candy while she’s up to temp and performing…

If you’ve got deep pockets you can get your shiny magic flute dephleg’d but not too hard and fast else she puke all over your PC…

Dirty little boiler when your done with her…

Don’t spend too much time cleaning her up. She runs better a little dirty..

Cheers!
