Few question

Post by jsec »

Hallo,

I try maked vodka. I maked barley malt a use receipt from http://www.brewhaus.com/Wheat-Vodka-Recipe.pdf, because they wrote that I do not need hold temperature. I only warm up water, put all inside and turn off heat. But my first attempt was not very success. Very small alcohol. I used barley in place of wheat, if it has any difference.

Next I try make alcohol from grain with hold temperature. Now I make wheat malt. Can I use any kind of malt with any combination of grain. For example barley and wheat malt for conversion?

And yeast. In my country I never seen sell special yeast as turbo yeast etc. I use only baker yest. Has it any other effect than another smell and less yield? I heard about yeast for wine? It is better use yeast for wine than baker yeast?

Thanks for help.

Welcome, jsec. I think if you look around a bit, you could find some excellent lager or pilsner yeast in the CR. World famous, even.

As to the fermentation, I suspect you're not getting starch conversion. Try the iodine test (Uncle Jesse just posted an excellent photo-essay, it's in "How I do a cooked rye mash" in this forum) to be sure. Any combination of grains should work very well. Starch conversion is the important step when using all-grain mashes.

Good Luck!

Thanks for reply. I maked iodine test. After I put grain into water, the iodine test show black color. Then I put into water malt and after cca 3 minutes the iodine test did not show black color. So conversion was done.
But in phorum people write, that conversion take much more time. I think, that i used great pieces o cracked corn so I put in water only few starches.

Altough in CZ we have many brewers, but get brewer yest is big problem :(.
