Bluegrass Music

Post by Virginia Gentleman »

Just starting up the topic to take it out of the distilling topics. Love to talk about it, play it, listen to it, go to festivals. I've got a ton of formatted chords, lyrics and tabs a made up for the group of pickers I play with, if anyone's interested.

Two of my latest finds are "King Wilkie" a Virginia act on Rebel Records named for Bill Monroe's horse. Kids just out of college, but they do it the old way and can really play. Also "Jim Lauderdale & Ralph Stanley - Lost in the Lonesome Pines." Zacchaeus is an amazing song.

Yeah, Del and his boys are pretty much the stars of modern bluegrass. Wearing a ball cap right now with his autograph on it. Ronnie is one of my favorite mando pickers, and Del's voice is unmatched. We do our best with 1952 Vincent, Mill Towns and a few others. Tough to match Del's range, though! I go see him whenever I can, THM.

Is the next line "Just lie back among the juniper" ?

I think I got that song on an album I bought when a folk singer came through Baraboo. Right now his name escapes me, but I loved his music.

That's it! "We'll just lay there by the Juniper, while the moon is bright. Watchin' them jugs a' fillin' in the pale moonlight."

Great tune for sure. Copper Kettle is the name of it. Recorded by Charlie Waller and others.

Obscure Tunes

Post by Gypsy Davey »

Ahhh.... the sweet relief of restored memory.

I still don't remember the name of the singer that traveled through southern WI in my youth, but I do remember humming:

"Get you copper kettle,
and get you copper coil.
And lie back, among the juniper."

over and over again while I put my first one together.

So while I have your attention- do you know a song titled "The Duke of Dubuque"?

thanks

Dave

Hey Dave, it's a great song. Might have been Chet Atkins or Joan Baez you heard if from. "My daddy, he made whiskey. My grandaddy did too. But we ain't paid no whiskey tax, since 1792..."

I think I posted the lyrics on here a while back. Yup, in this thread:

Lots of good bluegrass songs about moonshining, of course.

I sorta remember "The Duke of Dubuque." I think the Manhattan Transfer played it?

Hey VG: Just sittin around listening to some family music, "In the Blue Hills of Virginia", and wondering if it's an old Virginia classic or if the Delmore Brothers wrote it. I can't find any other recordings on the 'net, but it really doesn't sound like their style. Any clues?

Far as I can tell, no one else has recorded it, so it may well be an original. Or it could be a Traditional that they arranged, like most of the Carter Family tunes.

Good stuff, Bama. We nearly got us a full band on here! What's your favorite instrument? I'm mainly guitar, but mess around with mando and my boy (8 yrs.) is taking fiddle lessons. Can't go wrong with Dr. Ralph and Ricky. A favorite is Ricky and Tony Rice together. You heard the album Ralph did with Jim Lauderdale? There's a great song on there called Zaccheus we've been working on.
